The Fans Are Supose To Be On On Slow Speed With Aircon Switched On All The Time. If You Switch The Aircon On And The Cooling Fans Go On Fast Then Go Off Then Come Back On A Bit Like There Pulsing The Slow Speed On The Cooling Fans Have Burnt Out. Also Check The 40amp Strip Fuse On The Battery Fuse Box Check For Signs Off Fatigue To The Fuse As When The Fans Go Straight On To Fast Speed It Pulls Nearly 60amps And The Fuse Will Blow In The End

My 52plate R just had both fans replaced under warranty at Letchworth SEAT too!

Same symptoms - fans instantly cut in on starting the car from cold and make a right "woosh" noise. Certainly NOT normal behaviour.

No quibble from dealers. "Yup, low speed setting on fans is dead", replaced both fans pretty much instantly for me...

My 2002 LCR has over 60000 miles on it now. Had the fans replaced just before 60000K as they finally accepted they were faulty. Kept blowing main fuse and making a terrible racket. I have air con all the time.

fan problem continued

ok all.. an update on my fan saga.... !!

After seat listers coventry told me there was nothing wrong with my 03 lcr [:@] even after i took a technician out for a drive and showed him the problem.,...
i went to the trouble of booking the car in again this time at Willoughbys garage in chilwell, nottingham. I printed off this thread and gave it to them...

surprise surprise within 3 hours I had a call back saying yep, slow speed on fan unit has gone exactly as I'd told them :) so, well pleased that its been recognised by them as a fault... the only problem now is the parts are on back order so going to have to wait a while I think to get it fixed....

my letter of complaint to seat listers is on the way but I also want to write to seat Uk.. anyone know the right address for me to write to?

forum really helped me out with this .... thanks guys

I have a problem with the electric engine cooling fans cutting in on my LCR even when cold. Initially I thought it was the hot weather we have been having but it does it from cold start after about 30 secs, blows for 6 seconds then stops, this is repeated every 30 - 40 seconds. However if I have the air con switched off the fans stay off.

It is booked in at the dealers to have a look on Wednesday as I have a 400 mile trip at the weekend, so want to make sure the fans work when they should.

Does anyone have any suggestions of what the fault could be so it gets fixed properly.

thanks

Par

I have a Leon FR which was new in Jan 05 and until recently I have not had this problem, now if I sit in the car with the engine running the revs increase slightly a fan noise? appears for a few seconds and then it all returns to normal.

If I have my lights on they dim, as do the dash lights.

Went in for service and informed them of the problem, got a response which I did not understand but was given the impression that this is normal?

I disagree!

It's not normal. I have exactly the same thing happening on my LCR at the moment (except the revs drop slightly, not increase). It's going in to the dealer next Wednesday to be fixed which involves fitting new cooling fans. Tell them you know it's not normal and that's it's the cooling fans that are the problem. If you turn your climate control off you won't see the fans kicking in. I have since having this problem had my temperature gauge move off the middle once towards 3/4 but then the high speed fans kicked in and it went back to normal, so best to get it sorted ASAP (this happened without the climate control on). ;)

Make sure you keep a regular eye on your 40A fuse on the battery. This is for the high stage, it won't take long for it to go with the fans cutting in and out. If it goes you have no cooling at all.
Other option is to drive without CC on, this way the fans will only be used when needed by the engine so fuse should last longer.

My LCR has just started doing this i.e. both fans cutting in at full tilt for about 5 secs when sitting in traffic, revs drop lights dim etc. and repeating every minute or so. Done 21k miles. Definately did not used to do this. I live right by Listers Seat Coventry - where I bought it - so taking it there tomorrow. Hope I have more luck than LCRnewbie!

jamesb.. i wrote to Listers last week and complained about my experience with them and told them how good willoughbys had been. I received an apology letter from them in which they admitted they had screwed up... so they definitely know about this problem...

Mine is all fixed now and so far its been fine.. if you have any problems with Listers Cov let me know and I'll give you my details to try and help you.. I also sent a copy of my complaint letter to Seat UK so Listers won't want to get it wrong again..

Good luck

we had a v5 toledo in at the dealer i work at i showed the apprentice what to look for yesterday but some idiot had put a 50amp strip fuse in instead of the 40 amp and it wasnt the correct size so they had to bend it to get it to fit. told him it needed new fans and a new fuse and recomend not to use the aircon intill fixed.thats someone else now who can diagnos the fault. i think the cooling fans will go on back order soon, about time for a recall on certain models i think and seat to claim the money back of the fan manufactures

i had been thinking along the same lines.. surely there should be a recall for a fault like this when it appears to be common across the VAG range.... or do recalls only happen when safety is affected by the fault?

Ok, thanks, dropped by Listers on way to work on Friday, now booked in for Tuesday. The service guy still said he had not heard of this before. I reckon these guys are trained never to admit anything. When I took my LCR in about a year ago because the rear screen wash was flooding the boot - another common fault according to this forum - again they'd never heard of it.

I will let you know how I get on...

it wouldnt be a saftey recall it would be one of those check when the vehicle is in for service and check stock vehicles so called SAFTEY CAMPAIGN that dealers get letters for but dont tell the customers

Thanks LCRnewbie and dontnoanything, but Listers have sorted it. They replaced the electric fans. I had a chat to the mechanic afterwards, he seemed a really good guy, they only became aware of the problem after someone complained - I assume you LCRnewbie until then they had sent a few people on their way without fixing the "fault". In a way they were glad you complained because it brought it to their attention and they have fixed a number since then. Thanks again all.

a good result !

Thats brilliant news mate, glad they sorted out for you... I'd always found them to be quite good until this one problem.

Just to goes to show that unless you make a fuss the dealers don't learn about any new faults that may arise of whichever model car.

My cars up for sale now  , second baby nearly here !!

The fault is usually the both the fans and also the main fuse above the battery in the engine bay, the fan motors F**k up and cause the fuse to burn out causing the vehcle to overheat

I went to Willoughbys with my LCR fans too, fuses had gone bang, had to get the AA out and everything.

Willoughbys were brilliant...even though it was supposed to take 2 nites to get new fans (apparently they were "broken") they kicked and screamed and got em next day.

Spot on.
