This Year Alone Ive Changed 8 Cooling Fans To Cupra R Leons And 10 To V5 And 18 Toledos U Have To Change Both Fans. Fault Is Easy To Find By Puting On Aircon And Fast Speed On Fans Come On Then Go Off Then Come On And So On Got Fault Early In The Year With A V5 Toledo Blowing The 40amp Strip Fuse On Top Of The Battery. And Seat Technical Was Responsible For The Diognosis. But I Have Changed About 20 Water Pumps On Different Seats Due To The Impeler Falling Off Normal Fault Ok Doing Normal Speeds But Temp Very High With Warning Light Flashing In The End When Booting The Car On A Run. Hope Thats Helpfull

Well it appears there were two faults, the lower speed fan was not working, this was obvious from the first time I stopped on the motorway.....and following repair of the box under the battery both fans now operate.

However the exact description above now occurs, sub 60mph and the water temp stay at 90, above 60mph and the high temps and flashing red light.

So the water pump too

Does seem that way as I said previously thats what happened to mine 40-50 mph everything normal, then as you say over 60 just keeps going up till you slow down again.

Ah the joys of working close to a garage, the mechanic from TSR just brought the water pump over to the office for me to see, the impeller is cracked and in 2 or three bits......may as well have a new cam belt on too :(

TSR are looking at replacements that are metal not plastic and will give me a cost option.....looks like my transport tonight is a large TSR diesel van :D

I mentioned the cambelt to the garage they told me it didn't need replacing as it had another 60K till it needed changing, I just said if it looks rough put a new one on. How much was the control box for the fans as I don't think mine are working properly.

Around £50-£60 I think

Is it worth while getting a metal impeller pump?

OK been doing some research and VAG still produce the std part in plastic, can;t be that many warranty issues me thinks  anyway found a link on VW Vortex........

ECS tuning www.ecstuning.com do a Cast Iron version

and in the UK www.vwandaudi.co.uk Murray's parts do a Brass Impeller  odd choice of material but better than plastic.

Seat Leon Cupra R 2003 AMK engine Brass Impeller £23.05 + VAT + Delivery...this is just the impeller not the pump / O-ring etc

May well be worth people ordering one when they have the cambelt done to get one put in at the same time...

well i hope most of you can get both faults done under waranty. i do work at a dealers but only 2 years but 2 years with skoda aswell. same faults on both from talking to old mates. problem working at dealers have to use vw parts so no metal impelers on our water pumps. are part geting worse or what. ive heard reports in canada questioning vw reliability with parts. supose its cost cutting, but they are learning.

Well mine has a plastic one again for the time being, hopefully it will last till the cambelt service and i'll get a metal impeller for then.

Thanks for the diagnosis, spot on ;)

Yeah german and swedish car parts also do brass impeller too.

I'd take the brass one as it wont rust.

I take it it is reusable.

Replaceing the water pump

Hey,

I am convinced the plastic impeller on my water pump is gone. I tried changing the thermostat and it still over heats. The gasket is fine and there are no blockages.
I got the new water pump from the Westerham Dealer and got a mate over who knows and has changed cam belts before.
He looked at it and laughed. QUOTE: "The engine and parts are all shoe horned into place".
We could not see any other way to put the new pump into place with out jacking up the engine. Even if we removed all the pipes, fuel, air, water etc then the expansion tank, the power steering pump and then fan belt, prob take off the cranks of the fan belt there was still a fecking big lump of metal in the way. It looked like the engine mount....

Does anyone know how an engineer @ Seat Service Center would do it? I have a mobile mechanic coming out on Wednesday to do this but I recon he will just tell me to take it to a Seat dealer. What do you guys recon?

Cheers
Olly
