Electric Fan Problem

Just thought I'd add that I've had this problem too - twice, and had it solved (just about) twice. But I'm not convinced it's fixed yet.

Firslty I got them to check the earth as it should go to the body work (and also isn't where it says it is in their mechanics manuals) :( This helped a bit as it stopped the engine displaying a fault code.

However your fans going on in short bursts tends to suggest to me that they are going to blow (no pun intended) soon as that's what they diagnosed with mine. I'm on my third set now, and I'm out of warranty next month.

As I hammer up and down between Windsor and Oxford everyday it doesn't like that in the summer (when it hit 30 degrees and up) and I'm sure I'll be having the argument of a reoccurring fault even though it isn't in warranty anymore next summer. :censored:

Also the police *gawd bless their chasing of normal motorists* aren't bothered about the chasing the people who hit me (and promptly drove off) on the A34 in March and knackered the bumper. Even though they had other witnesses. And a consistent reg number. And all the necessary details. :censored: :censored:

However they were more than happy to take 300 notes +6pts off me when I was slingshotting a roundabout in Bristol in 2003 at a little over the 50 mph limit. :censored:

I think I've got this problem now too.

Ever since I bought the car the fans have been coming on and going off again when the air con is on.

On the way back from Goodwood on saturday, stuck in traffic in 25c heat, the temp warning buzzer came on. Pulled over and found that the 40amp flat fuse had blown.

I've just tried to order a new fuse from seat, but the parts guy had trouble finding the part (despite having my chassis number) and says they're green or yellow fuses now (mine are all plain metal).

Have Seat changed the fused so that they're coloured, or has the parts guy got the wrong fuse? Does anyone have the part number for the 40amp flat fan fuse?

I've not had any problems with the temp rising above 90c when crusing at high speeds, just when it comes on at low speed with the air con on. Does this mean that its only the low speed fan that has gone? What will I need to get replaced?

Sounds like the wrong fuse, the fuses on the battery are the flat metal strip type as you described.

My SEAT dealer gave me a few spares which I used to keep in the car all the time as Halfrauds etc don;t stock the fuses.

If you are handy with a soldering Iron there is a 'fix' for the problem fans over on UKMK1v's web site.......unless you are still under warranty in which case get the car in quick

I thought it was the wrong fuse, but he did describe it as a strip fuse.

I did find this:
"1J0 937 555 A - cover
1J0 937 617 A - fuse holder
N 104 249 02 - fuse
N 104 249 03 - fuse
N 017 131 15 - flat fuse"

over here: http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/showthread.php?t=65845&highlight=flat+fuse+part+number

Is "N 017 131 15 - flat fuse" the correct part number for the 40amp fuse?

I'll have a look on the UKMK1V's forum, but I guess I need to get the slow speed fan fixed first.

My fuses on top of battery are all flat strip style, fuse surround is green in colour

My 210 LCR MY03

Hope that helps

Most people's dealers seem to know what these are given the common prob. If yours don't that a bit worrying. Try one of the dealers that have a section on here and get some posted to you ;)

Cheers guys,
I've just got them to order some of each fuse, so it should be ok.

Car's also booked in for next tuesday to check the low speed fan (cecil & larter in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk). The seat warranty ran out in June though, although the fans been gone for a while because the high speed fan has always been coming on since I got the car about 6months ago. It's just taken the blown fuse to highlight the problem.

Luckily I got a years RAC warrenty with the car, so hopefully that will cover it.

Hmm, just read through this. My fans seem to come on a lot and they are barsteward loud like! Sounds like some sort of noeing 747 firing up. They only seem to do it when the aircon is on though

Had my LCR 2 weeks but it is under warranty. Might take a trip to the stealers... and see if they can sort this weird knocking noise on my suspension as well. Tools.

I've had exactly the same problem with my LCR recently. I posted a thread about it a couple of weeks ago, after having been fobbed off by the stealer.

I've not been able to get the car back to them since.

Just checking out the forum before I rang them again, and found this thread.

Maybe if so many of us have the same problem, SEAT might sit up and listen (I'm not holding my breath though!).

Have a look here: http://www.uk-mkivs.net/forums/thread/449470.aspx

it seems that this problem is very common with VAG cars, apparently "over 45% of fans were or have been faulty".

When mine gets new fans on tuesday, if the RAC warranty doesn't pay out I'll be writing to seat about it to try and get some money off.

Oh, and the fuses the seat garage ordered were the wrong ones. Their system had the blade fuses and the flat fuses round the wrong way, so beware anyone else who needs a new fuse, they are not yellow or green!

I'll post the part number for the fuse when I get it tomorrow (hopefully).

For those of you that are out of warranty, I've had a quote for new fans to be fitted by my dealer. A hefty £400. I had this problem during my warranty period but didn't know it was a fault. Oh well live and learn:)

Last Saturday on the M25 my LCR 210 'brewed up' in slow traffic - no fans. The dealer has today quoted £440+ for two new fans and a fuse! The warranty expired in March, but I had identified the problem of the high speed fans cutting in at an earlier service - like alot of you I was fobbed off with the old "That's perfectly normal sir". So for the time being I'll take the 40 amp fuse and try to argue with SEAT UK that this should have been fixed in the warranty period when first identified. If that fails I'm doing the fix from the Golf MK IV forum.....

just how common is this problem? I am getting mine replaced on Monday too.
Surely a problem this big should have mean't a product recall?
Anyway, I hope it helps my aircon feel cooler.

Got my LCR booked into Patterson SEAT in Newcastle to look at the high speed aircon fan problem on Thursday. Only 6 months left on warranty so need to get this sorted out ASAP.

Warranty ran out Jan 06

My fan had always came on every 30 to 60 seconds and was quite loud up until a month ago when it stopped working, my temperature guage went straight in to the red and had to call out the RAC becuase I was worried that I would damage my engine.

RAC finally arrived after 40mins and advised me to take it to the main dealers as the car had only been services 2 weeks ago.

There was a electrical fault with the fan motor and blew the fuse.

New fan/motor and fuse = cannot remember exactly how much it set me back, but it was approx £250.00

The new fan does not come on as frequent and is very quiet.

I've just had my fuse and contol unit replaced by the dealer after my fans stopped working. But they still come on a lot, and only at high speed (both fans).
After reading this thread I understand that they are supposed to be on slow speed when a/c is on. Mine does not! Talked to the dealer, and they said that it were only one speed...fast...! They can't be right then...
And when I park my car after driving I can now hear a buzzing sound from the fan to the left (seen from front of car). And it stays on for about 10 min. But the fan is not running.

Buzzing noise is normal, it's the coolant circulation pump.

Fans only on one speed is not normal. with the aircon on the fans run at slow speed to keep air moving over the aircon rad so the aircon works when stationary. the high speed is for when the engine gets really hot or when the slow peed is busted. The high speed kicking in and out that frequently with the aircon on will melt the fuse and leave you with no engine cooling!! Only time I remember hearing them at high was when they were broken.

Find someone at the dealer that knows what there on about. AFAIK V5's, gti's leons, toledos all have had this problem.
Vw forums also have threads regarding this.
