Sachs Clutch and Quaife Differential review
-----

Having many conversations with my best mate Slick it was clear that I had to try the car out before I made any sort of judgement on how the car reacted and handled. Even though I knew what the ultimate end result would be...grip...I had not a slightest clue how the grip would transfer to the car in real world driving. The only time i ever felt amazing grip was three scenarios as a passenger. Firstly my uncles 450bhp Seirra Cosworth, secondly my brothers Subaru WRX STI and thirdly Slicks Leon TDI.

Speaking to Shaun@AmD on about what the diff has done to my car on the Saturday morning was an encouraging one. Shaun basically said to me "Maz just drive it and you will know its there, it will pull you round the corners. You will feel the inside wheel gripping more as you go around". Off I went and the first thing I noticed was how on an uneven road the diff was instantly transfering power to each wheel to make sure grip was always there. Was quite a strange sensation going in a straight line feeling this. As I approached the first round about I found myself noticing how tight the steering was and how heavy the Sachs clutch was in relation the the OE one. Diving into the next gap on the roundabout was like nothing i was expecting from my cars previous manners. It basically launched itself with no wheel spin in wet conditions and all I was feeling was the grip whilst pointing the steering wheel eagerly in the direction I wanted to go. I felt the right wheel pull me away from the roundabout and as I turned the wheel the power transferring from the left to the right wheel pulling me around the roundabout and off to the next exit. Words cannot describe how intense this felt for a 2wd car. The level of grip compared to the setup before is phenomenal.

Similar results happened on every bend and roundabout I encountered. What also impressed me was that i wasn't even attacking the corners at speed. I felt the faster I went round the bends the more the diff pulled me around. At the moment I am holding back to get used to the clutch and diff however I can categorically say that this is the best mod to date albeit the most expensive.

If warranted I will try and write more about my experiences but it has to be seen to be believed. Kind of hard to explain!

Thank you to Shaun, Nick and Everyone at AmD Technik Essex for the hard work thats gone into the car! :)

Car Update - Flywheel problem and strange induction problem #2
-----

Since the car has come back it has been running absolutely lovely. No clutch slip what so ever, which is to be expected with a new clutch. I am getting used to the Sachs kit now and love the heaviness of it.

As for the strange induction/turbo problem i reported few weeks back. It seems that the problem I had recently and possibly since I have owned the car was that it has had a black temperature sensor instead of a good green one. What that basically means is that the car has been getting slightly confused at times temperature wise hence strange surges in boost / fuelling every now and again which got progressively worse as the weather got colder. When Steve and Kenny at AmD took the car out, they said it pulls strongly but somehow felt a little bit flat. Now with the new sensor the car pulls smoothly strongly and the best thing of all is that my mpg has gone up and I get far less smoke!

Also another positive is my SFS blue pipe no.4 turned up! :)

Car has been running really sweet and pulling well :)

Took it for a good test couple of nights back and suddenly lost power in 3rd. Oh dear...looked under bonnet and it seems that now the car has proper sensors and is pushing more power one of the boost pipes came loose from the EGR. Taking car in tomorrow to get it fixed fixed as i couldnt push the pipe in so it clipped. I think T-Spark has same problem? Shame that this has happened with SFS hoses.

Shame you reused the OE clips which are cheap and brittle ;)

Car Update #3
-----

Turbo is officially dieing! :(

Its making strange "grinding" noises, overboosting causing the car to go into limp mode. VAGCOM is showing Charge Pressure Contr. Positive Deviation. The vains on the turbo are working as the actuator arm is still operating then normally. Tried with VAGCOM a vain exercise procedure however as stated it looks like its working correctly so it must be some other internal problem with the turbo.

Spoke to Shaun@AmD and looks like I will have to go big turbo route. Looks like a Turbodynamics turbo but which one? Going to have to do some research.

Going to have to do some research.

Turbo Dynamics do a range of hybrid turbos.
Set 1 - PD130

Stage 1 = MD345 = GT17 compressor wheel.
Stage 2 = MD446 = GT20 compressor wheel.

Set 2 - PD150
Stage 1 = MD374 = GT17 compressor wheel
Stage 2 = MD376 = GT20 compressor wheel

Stage 1 – MD374

Hi flow GT17 compressor wheel, cnc machined compressor housing, 360 degree thrust bearing, cut back turbine blades, lightening of turbine wheel for faster ‘spool up’, modified V.N.T. turbine housing, uprated turbine seals. Other ‘blueprinting’ modifications. APPROX 200 - 220 BHP

Stage 2 – MD376

Hi flow 2275 spec compressor wheel, cnc machined compressor housing, 360 degree thrust bearing, cut back turbine blades, lightening of turbine wheel for faster ‘spool up’, modified V.N.T. turbine housing, uprated turbine seals. Other ‘blueprinting’ modifications. APPROX 240-260 BHP

Stage 1 £925 plus VAT for new unit
Stage 2 £975 plus VAT for new unit
