Alright Lee, yeah I thought that but its definatley more than 20 sec's! Even seems a bit smokey you know petrolly. Does stop and returns a decent average mpg, its standard as well, well with just a smoothed airbox and a standard filter but it does pull like a train and was a bit uncontrolable in the weather last night. I am used to quick fwd cars had a 220bhp 250lbft series 1 Rs Turbo and stuff like that, but loving this car!

Ok coolant sensor changed and no improvement as my gauge now reads the same as vagcom so it was duff but now I'm having a surge in temp reading depending upon whether I am pooling round town or booting it down a roads etc. Moves from 70-90 degrees whenever I do. Assume thermostat? I've seen the guide to thermostat changing, will any coolant come out when I remove the stat? In the process of getting bits together for boost leak test also as was hesitating on throttle before mpg issue

Cheers

If you take the wires off the alternator, then you can get a socket into the bottom nut not to badly, I used quarter drive and angled it in, not being a tart but I found it quite an easy job, done mine a couple of weeks back, got it from awesome.

Ok but its something ill be able to do in a carpark once i have got the bits, etc.

If i change this and its still not sorted what would be the next possible issue? Ive read about water pumps but i hope there are other things to try first!

I thought you'd found it with the temp sensor. Never mind keep trying.

As for the water pump. They are usually changed at the same time as cam belt as the plastic(?) impellor often failed at around 80K. Mine was replace with the metal version at about 65K when I had the cam belt done. Any ideas when/if yours has been done?

Have a go with the thermostat. It won't hurt and is again a cheap fix.

Have you checked all the obvious as well. Does the car still roll properly i.e. tyres inflated, no sticking brake pads, bearings on their way out, wheels tracked etc. Just worth a thought before putting all the effort on the engine.

It seems to be keeping you busy anyway ;). By the way what model/ bhp is this? couldn't spot a reference.

Remember reading in history around 50-60k it was done. No issues with bearings tyres or sticking calipers, etc. The temp sensor was duff anyway so all good. Got a stat for £3.37 so just got to fit it and grab coolant then fingers crossed sorted. Cheers so far guys

Glad I found this thread - was just about to post something similar.

I used to get around 33mpg on my 35 mile drive to work. This has now dropped to 28mpg.

My temp gauge mostly stays at 90 but seems to randomly drop to 80 and then back up to 90, so I'm assuming the engine's over-fuelling due to the low temp.

I have had the green coolant sensor for years so I'm ruling that out. Interested to know how easy it is to swap the thermostat...

Is there a way to use the aircon readout to see the "real" coolant temp? Or do I need VagCom?

Is VagCom likely to have logged a fault code for this?

Cheers,

Mark.

Why rule it out, might be faulty now?

Chances are it is the thermostat though.

Cheers for the codes :) Will check the readout tonight.

Before my coolant temp sensor was changed to the green one, the temp gauge used to drop to zero, or would just stay on zero for ages, so slightly different symptoms.

I might fit a new temp sensor just in case, only £8 after all.

Driving home tonight I noticed that the temp drops are not random - there are a few steep hills on the way home, and if I'm coasting downhill, no revs, just braking, the temp gauge drops to 80 until I get to the bottom of the hill and start giving it some beans...the gauge quickly goes back up to 90.

With the air being cold just now, it's almost as if the coolant is dropping in temp unless I'm giving it some revs. Would having too much coolant in the system cause this?

OK new stat fitted, it was dark by the time i had chance to do it so was a pain in the ass!
Massive improvement in mpg, just seen 31mpg round on a journey about 15miles and i was seeing 21mpg at best with the same sort of journey before so thanks guys for your help. Ill get logging done to check boost etc is correct and update further :)

Well done. Glad you've sorted it. (Any tips on changing the thermostat? other than not doing it in the dark)

After following this thread and reading all the info on it I noticed that my temp read out dropped to about 75ish when I went round a long left hand bend (Basically a sweep back under a dual carriageway) then it went and climbed back up to just above 90. I have noticed that the temp gauge has been sitting above 90 (about 91/92) for a while now and was hoping the service last week would sort it out. I haven't seen the poor MPG that you were seeing but is struggling to get to the low 30's nowdays. I just thought it was the poor quality of the overpriced fuel!!

I'll keep an eye on it on the way home tonight. Could be something at fault or just paranoia

I did have a slow decline in mpg I just thought it was cos i was due a service along with my fuel filter looking more like it had bleach in it than fuel due to how thick it was but didnt make a difference, then the cold weather struck which showed up my stat.

When changing the stat i removed the plastic part that goes round the dipstick and runs along the front of the inlet manifold, then the metal part that this attaches to i also removed which meant i had enough room to access the stat easy enough. I used a long allen key to reach both the top and bottom bolts without having to remove any cables,id suggest d/c'ing battery to make sure you dont short out the alternator and get a nasty shock. My allen keys had a ball end to allow me to do at an angle,i just used a pair of pliers on the hand of the allen key in order to crack them off.

like these: http://www.ttcuk.com/ekmps/shops/to...len-key-set-goldguard-9-pc.-metric-7225-p.jpg then the pliers on the short side whilst the long side is into the bolts.

A flexy head screwdriver would be best IMO but i didnt have one kicking around
