Seat Ibiza 1.6 TDI

Hi guys. New to the forum. My names Shane. I live on the tip of West Wales but work near Cardiff. I would like to ask the pros and cons on buying a Seat Ibiza 1.6 TDI? My gf bought one brand new last year and i must say it has impressed me regarding the cost of running it, esp with the tax only being £30. I have read about this soot light coming on and it has come on hers after only 4k, rang the dealers and they said to take it on the motorway, and sure enough the light went. Is this something to be worried about in the future? I currently own a Merc C Class 2.7 D and it drinks diesel round town but gets about 50mpg on the motorway. I do about 300 miles a week and currently spend about £40 on diesel. I have 11k to spend on a car and this seems to be the perfect car to buy for the long run. If someone could give me a detailed opinion on the car that would be great. Its either this car or a BMW 1 series 118D with 70k on the clock but i would prefer a car on lower mileage.

Another question do they manufacture coil overs for this model? I am not going silly with the car just want to lower it slightly on some BBS wheels.

Thanks and nice to meet you all

MPG seems to be hit and miss - don't buy on that basis, I made that mistake. You can squeeze 50 mpg on a run but rarely any more. Great car, just not that cheap to run in the real world.

I second what Sergio says... Some owners get fantastic MPG returns (high 50s), yet for no reason other owners with an identical car, and doing similar driving struggle to break 50MPG....

The 1.6 TDI cars do seem to suffer problems with the DPF (soot filter) but this seems only to be an issue if your car is predominately stuck in urban driving. Sounds like you do regular motorway journeys so it shouldn't be a problem for you.

The 2.0TDI engines in the Ibiza FR aren't as troubled with the DPF issue - I've had my car for 5K miles now and never had the dreaded DPF light come on yet, and haven't heard any other FR TDI owner on here complain about this either. I get between 48-55MPG average for this car. Only down-side is that they are a bit more expensive to buy (and probably insure) than the 1.6TDI. They are quicker mind you! LOL ;)

You might be able to get a 10 plate FR TDI for between 10-11K if you look around, and pay a little less for a 1.6TDI (probably around £1K less than the equivilant FR), though I haven't checked used prices for a while so others might be better placed to advise you on this.

I have looked into the 2.0 TDI but the prices on most are above 13k. I want something cheap on tax. How much is the tax on the 2.0 TDIs?

Yes i just googled Seat Ibiza owners club and 2 came up, i want as much information as possible before spending a potential 10k on one.

Thanks for all of your detailed responses guys :)

Tax on the 2.0TDI is £95 P/A.

Where are you looking at prices for used FR TDIs? I got my car in August this year, "10" plate FR TDI for £11.5K and it had only 10.800 miles on the clock. As there has been a change of reg plates since I'm sure the price for a similar car will have fallen below £11K now...

Wouldn't think used prices are that much cheaper in Scotland! ;)

Do 1k miles a week, so don't have any DPF issues - also rag it around country lanes at weekends for the laugh which I'm sure cleans the pipes. Really does depend on driving style.

A Fiesta TDCI Zetec-S would be a good alternative, they actually do 60mpg and I don't think the DPF issues are as prominent on Fords.

wow that is quite some mileage! Don't really want to go to the Ford side of things, i have seen the interior on some of the brand new builds and they look so cheap.

I got my car through Arnold Clark, they seem to be the cheapest out there apart from buying privately. Personally I woldn't use Arnold Clark for servicing (couple of mates have had very bad experiences with them) but I have no problems with buying the car form AC and then getting it serviced elsewhere! lol Also a lot of AC's car stock comes from car hire or company car fleets, so make sure you ask who the previous owner was... My car was perviously privately owned.

Mine is the most unreliable car I've ever known. Not trying to put you off buying one, but I had to wait for it to break down 3 times before they finished building it. Bits fall off. Runs poorly. Still really like it but it can be ****ing nightmare and I can't wait to swap it for a Volvo C30.

You buy a 10 plate Fiesta and I'll swap with you...

Coming from an Ibiza owner, you would be better off buying a Fiesta.

just googled them and saved their website, thanks for the heads up on them. Will keep an eye out on there

Sorry to hear your problems with the car, actually quite surprised to be honest.

I have similar veiws to Sergio. Like mine a lot but it's not perfect and I think the latest fiesta is a better car. Almost went in to buy a Polo last weekend....

Not had a single issue with mine - well apart from a sticking exterior door handle, which I cured in under 2mins with a can of spray lube.

Think Sergio has had a bit of a Friday afternon car! I had a Punto like that so I know what it feels like! Put me off Fiats for life!!!
