Rear washer squirting at the same time when activating front washer?

Hi guys,

Searched, I know the rear washers leak, I dont seem to have a leak. My problem is that when I pull the stalk to perform a front screen wash, some water comes out of the rear washer but with very low pressure?

Been wondering what this could be, maybe theres a valve that is letting water through in the rear wash against the pressure of the water when the front wash is activated?

Before I go on the voyage of discovery, has anyone else had a problem like that and would like to share?

Cheers guys.

windscreen washer motors are just small scalectrix type motors with a spoked drive on the end that when

+/- it spins right and water goes out the RH pipe to the front
-/+ and it spins left for water to go out the LH pipe to the rear

after a while the seals harden up a bit and/or the pipes get muck in em and stuff and the pressure builds up a bit giving out fluid at both ends

vehicular visionary fluid incontinence in other words :p

this all sounds to technical can you simplify it for me :D

Or are you saying that we should pull the pipes off and give them a good clean ??

Sounds like looking around the windscreen wash pump for blocking in either pipes would be worth a look as I think what he is saying is anything blocking on either side could cause back pressure on the washer motor and some may leak back to the other side. I think as it only happens that I get some rear wash when I do front wash and not vice-versa, this implies the front screen washer outlet could be blocked somewhere. I'll have a look in a couple of weeks when Ive got some time off and report. Unless someone beats me to it.

If anyone wants to give me a heads up as to where it lives under the hood or any other info...Im all ears.

Had this problem, AMD stated as flapper said its due to blocked pipes, but unfortunately on the occasion its the pump itself it wears out and throw water at both screen, got mine replaced, if i remember its not THAT expensive to replace, think about £30 odd?

nice one.

Had a chat with a VAG tech at the weekend and it seems that the pump is attached to the water bottle with the two feeds connecting to it. He says its got some spring valves in it and seeing as both directions are spraying ok (front and rear) but I get rear leakage on a front spray, its probably just bust spring valve. Im going to replace it (not sure of the cost yet but cant be too much) and see if that sorts it.

let us know how you get on please
part numbers and if fiddly etc would be appreciated

not a major issue, just a little annoying

sure, it doesnt look fiddly, it just clips into the side of the bottle...but I havent done it yet, so that may change :O)

Did this a month or so back...indeed its a really simple job, just pops out, pull out pipes, connect pipes to new pump and push back into the bottle holder. 15 min job. Sorted the issue with the rear being squirted on front squirt.
