Apparently i have been abit generous when topping-up the oil:redface:
I have been told there is approximately 1litre too much ! How will this affect the engine and will it damage it ???

for a start it can get into your catalytic converter and damage that
could also pressurize in your engine and damage seals
basically overfilling is a bad thing you really do need to drain some out

no worries sounds like you haven't majorly overfilled if you've been running for a month although damage to a cat may not be obvious until MOT time so fingers crossed

Yeah, fingers crossed, MOT not due for a couple of months yet, any signs of damage i should look out for?? smoke etc.?? ive had enough problems with the car, i definately dont need anymore, especially if they are my fault

probably only show up on the emissions test if you have no smoke now and only get a bit of water coming out should be OK

i wouldnt worry a huge deal. if you over filled and tracked the car or absolutlt ragged it by this i mean sloshing the sump around then their would be a chance it goes through the crank casing and into the exhaust system and then damaging the cat. if you have been driving sensibly then the 1ltr overfill would not have caused much damage if any. this will only equate to an additional 5mm of oil in the sump. obviously you dont want to run any longer with too much oil but take note for next time. never rush topping up or oil changes.
when i purchased a previous car it was almost 1 cm above the max but come mot time it passed.

What really annoyed me was, it was noticed by my local Seat garage when they fitted the free Coil pack, they could have just done it for me, it wouldnt have taken them 5mins, tight ba**ards[:@]

all good then best thing if you are topping up is to check it when it's warm ensure it on a level surface and has been standing for at least 10 minutes this ensures all the oil has drained back into the sump and you get an accurate reading when filling just a bit at a time (around a cup full) then give it a few minutes to settle check again and add more if required :)

Don't worry we have all done it at some point

At work we had a work experience kid in.

Workshop manager told him to top up the engine oil on a ride on mower, manager comes along to check the dipstick and oil comes pouring out the top of the dipstick hole!

All part of the experience :)

Cheers, Ell.
