BAM makes only 170..180hp

I have a 300k km driven LCR 2005 with BAM and it should make 225hp. Generally it works well:
* Acceleration is smooth (no hesitation), torque starts from ~3krpm
* Smooth idle
* Goes thru emission test
* No engine light, limp mode or fault codes that I know of
* Boost goes to target value 0.8bar upon full acceleration, goes even to 1.0bar with current setting

But:
* My air-vent fitted OBD computer shows max 170..180hp based on air intake values
* It also feels like more 150hp than 200hp of real power
* Engine eats some oil, must add some at least once in 10k km oil change period
* Smokes a bit more than I would expect
* Exhaust tip + surroundings get black and smudgy pretty fast

What i have done/checked:
* Fixed loose wastegate flap, this affected occasional chirping sound and improved boost a little. Turbo now sounds healthy and seems to spin with lower rpm.
* Tightened waste gate actuator so that boost pressure reaches target
* Unplugged and blocked the air line from dump/recirc valve to test that boost does not exit there
* New plugs
* New air filter
* Cleaned MAF with crc air sensor cleaning spray with negligible effect

What I might try next:
* Make sure the SW is correct and someone has not put a 180hp sw in it. Should the max 0.8bar boost request indicate something on this?
* Measure compression (does someone know the good range for BAM?)
* Check timing (any tips?)
* Send injectors to a test

Any theories or advice?

Previous owner has done N249 delete. The valve itself hangs in there but disconnected from air lines. The recirc/dump valve has been connected to intake manifold directly but atm this line is blocked for testing.

Just because the gauge says that much power, i wouldn't read too much into it. Apart from that it sounds fairly healthy. Boost sounds about right for a standard BAM

I'd definitely reconnect the dirverter valve as you're risking damaging your turbo without it. Other than that, with so many mods i'd say your best option is to put it on a dyno with someone who knows the 1.8t platform.

Compression is 200psi (new) and 140psi (rebuild)
All cylinders should be within 10% of each other

  • How old is the N75 valve? A fresh OE N75 might help a little
  • Test the DV if it leaks. Press the plunger and put a finger on the vacuum nipple, the plunger should not move
  • Pull the plug from the MAF (only temporary), see if that improves things
Compression test is a good one to do with that mileage
