Not sure what the black sludge is......hope it hasn't eaten into your fuel lines.

the sludge is something they call a diesel bug, over time the water and diesel combine and it aint good!
give the whole tank a flush through, new fuel filters and prob pipes aswell..

i dont know much about what to do with car fuel problems..

but this is a usuall thing for yachts etc. :think:

have changed the oil, been reading there isnt nothing pd specific for flushing engines

have disconnected the maf , turbo wouldnt spool up at all, would slowly rev to about 2-3k at the f=very most travelin

crapped it when pluggin maf back in was still the same , thought oh god what have i done now !!
turned engine off and restarted * and was fine again, thing it revs a little more freely now ,

* still doesnt start once engine is hot

I'm not like you guys...
the maf is a weak point on these engines tbh, just either put some dielectric grease on the maf connections (CAGE MOD) or just unplug it and plug it back in a few times to help clean it.
If ever i think my car is loosing a bit of poke, i do that anyway, seems to cure it haha.

As for the hot start problems, it sounds plausible with the temp sensors, but just to make sure, could the EGR valve be sticking open when its hot? When i turn my engine off you hear that click as it reverts back to its normal state (I always mix up when its open and closed).

Also could it not be something thats getting hot and expanding and cutting off the flow of fuel? Any unusual bends/kinks in the fuel rail or something?

Im rackin me brain as to what else it could be. Its either something daft like that, or its entirely electrical and id be checking every sensor i could think of.

Andy my fellow troublesome tdi owner - for flushing the engine, just use forte engine flush, along with a forte fuel flush - you can get them for around £15-20 they are really good.
If your car is reluctant to start when hot check to see if the anti shudder valve is sticking shut, after the engine swith of the valve closes to prevent engine run-on. In some instances it sticks - mine did and the car wound not run. If the egr valve sticks open it wont really make that much difference with regards to starting.

well i did take it off to clean all the gunk ,

the asv is the thing tat makes a pop upon shut off , it you push the rod in while engines on it stalls it - am i rite ??

if so im sure ive checked this and seemed fully shut , will check tonight

ok it sounds like the cam or shaft has worn will get the full diagnosis later on

things seem to be getting from bad to worse

anyone know the rough costing of this type of job, is it specialist or diy

Tappets are around £17 each
PD 150 cam is £350
Some of the cheese head bolts will need to be replaced costing approx £95
Oil and filter £35
labour Around £200
Cost approx £800.
Had mine done about 18 months ago
Not really a diy job unless time served with certain tools.

can anyone confirm if there a stronger/betther cam out there a fast road one or something ,

im thinkin ive i get it done may aswell change things the sametime , so any pointers

i could buy another engine but i may be in the same boat

looking back it could be that previous owners services might not have used the correct oil as it wernt always seat i think , will look at the history

but i cant really put the cam wear down to the hot start issue - theres not much swarf there , so could just be early signs of it wearing

surely its something else breaking down

New cam from VW or Seat, mate. There's a source for third party cams, but I'm not sure they are up to producing a camshaft in the same way that VW are, given that they know how their engines function. The problem VW had with the cams was a bad batch, between a certain period, so no longer an issue.

As for fast road cams or suchlike, not necessary. Diesel burns fairly slowly (compared to petrol) so no need to have high lift cams which open more, or stay open longer, as the speed of the burn governs how much revs the engine can run to.

Give Dave at Sere Motors a call and source the parts through him. Be cheaper than many places.
