Hi guys, I have been posting in the what have you done... thread but thought I would try keep it all separate so it doesnt all get lost with other posts.

so the bottom line is I changed the timing belt kit for a Gates kit and I had a noise when it went back together, sounds like a drumming/vibration type noise coming from the middle of the area around the waterpump or tensioner setup. I took off the AUX belt to rule out all of that side and the noise was still there, then I tried removing the bottom and middle timing belt covers and although the noise was quieter it was still there (I think the cover make it echo more). So failing to find where the noise was coming from I ordered Febi kit and replaced it all again and the same noise in the same position is still there. this video although it isnt my car sounds exactly the same....
I cannot think that I have been so unlucky that both kits are faulty and theres no manual adjustment in the tensioner setup its just pull the grenade pin and go so does anyone have any ideas?

Do you have the old tensioner and pulley? Would you be willing to give it a shot at installing the old tensioner just to rule it out? Maybe you can try and record sound only with your mobile getting close to each one of the pulleys to try and find out where the sound is louder and locating the origin?

Have you rule out the alternator?

yeah ive still got the old pulley, tensioner, belt and waterpump, all audi stamped parts and it was done at a seat dealership in wolverhamptom. and yeah ruled out alternator, its only 1 month old but ive had the aux belt off and ran the engine so the noise isnt coming from anything in the aux belt setup.

ive done around 150 miles on the new febi kit and although the noise is still there the car runs fine so im in two mind wether to try taking everything apart again or just leaving it and see how it goes, the video above were the guy comments that its calmed down after a while gives me some confidence that its a bedding in thing but any other timing belt ive done on other cars didnt have noises afterwards, its a catch 22 situation and to have the same noise with 2 different kits...hmmmm annoying

And all is tighten to standard correct torque? That's a odd one.
yep all torqued to factory specs.

Ive now done around 400 miles and the noise is still there but cars driving perfectly and you cant hear it from inside or from different places around the car, only from the drivers side wheel arch area, but I think I'm now in tune to the noise so its the only thing I can hear lol

I know how its like when we got that weird sound in our head and it doesn't go away. :)

I would take the bottom rock cover out and would try to see if anything is loose or tumbling around from down there (with engine running on idle).

I already had it running with no covers on it and the noise is still there.

I think that the belt is too tight on the waterpump side, when I put it all together it was a struggle to get the belt over the pump pulley, I think I should have tried to have it all on the waterpump side first and then slip it onto the tensioner side.

I dont know wether to try tackle the job again or not tbh.

You sorted it the long way. My mech was done the belt all over the pulley's path and for last the tensioner. Maybe you could try just to ease the tensioner a bit to see if it releases any pression or corrects the path towards the pulleys ahead.

do you have any recommendations for a timing belt brand? Going to eventually do mine. I got the Auq engine with 180 bhp. At the moment I’m choosing between ina and skf after hearing gates have issues with one of the parts included in the kit. Did you manage to sort out your issue?

INA, SKF, Gates, Febi, Contitech are all the good brands, I still have a slight noise, nowhere near as bad as it was, either that or Ive got used to it lol

Yeah it's a question of budget. As mentioned above, both are fine but if you want to go for the best of those I would pick SKF.

And can flushing the cooling system make things worse (when doing the belt) and is it better to leave as it is?

I would definitely do a cooling flush. Got to keep those veins pumping clean. I checked my friend's Opel Astra and that reservoir water is brown like mud!

Thanks! Got them in my eBay basket. ATM got the new shocks and springs on order etc. found some bilsteins im getting. I think due to the price I’ll go with the ina timing belt kit (100 vs 135) for the skf lmao unless I go AUTODOC. Also with flushing can it make it worse? As obv rn the car goes to temp properly etc and can blockages happen etc?
