Car developed a weird noise from the accessory belt, "Uh oh, one of the pulleys has gone" I thought.

Got the front end up in the air as I was swapping wheels and checking bolts etc (was running far too little camber) when I saw something coming off the subframe.

Good news! The pulleys aren't about to bite the bullet and leave me stranded! Bad news, it's developed a power steering fluid leak (the sound was the PAS pump running a tad dry). I can live with that
It's certainly better news 👍

The accessory belt clutch pulley can cause interment issues its recommend its changed every 40k , it can lock and take out the tensioner.. there not expensive for a genuine ini pulley mine cost £24 at Vw exact same pulley is £163 just in a different box.. mine was fine but there was an odd noise so changed it anyway and it was the original pulley as ini did an update on them

Anyone know off the top of their heads what the OEM brand coolant temperature sensor is, or just one that's reliable?

My Febi one has never quite been right - doesn't get to temperature, inconsistent readings, up and down. It's probably causing fueling issues too.

Been putting it off given there's no CEL and it normally means refilling the coolant, finding distilled water etc. but needs must...

Bosch or Lemforder are the usual two.

But I've never had any problems with the Febi though. That's what's in at the moment.

You should only lose a small amount changing the sensor though. Just make sure you take the blue cap off first!

Mines is a Febi, I replaced the original because it would never stay at 90 degrees, it would fluctuate up and down, even when I replaced it it still did it and ended up being the main thermostat, changed that and been all good since. and to replace the coolant temp sensor you wont lose much coolant, less than half a litre I'd say, its an easy job and you can literally pop the old out and new in within seconds minimizing coolant loss.

I lost probably most of my coolant when I changed the last one. You guys must have much faster hands than I do!

At least I can actually do the job now though, given that when I posted that, I'd just dropped the car in for its MoT. If it didn't pass, it was pretty much going in the bin.

Twenty years old this month and it's passed.

Rear springs probably need replacing, which could be an opportunity to lower it, but apparently it's a bit smoky, which they said could mean the turbo is on the way out, and that wouldn't surprise me. That'll cost a few pounds to sort...

She passed the MOT with flying colours at 23 years old, no advisories. MOT tester said she's in better condition than most 10 yr old cars he sees.

Can't believe the tax for the 1.8t is going up to £415 in April (£435 if you pay in installments) Sick of those theiving bastards in parliment.

Good to hear, you must look after it. My mot run out in November. Putting her through in the next month or 2, she should pass with no advisories. She's not had any on any previous mot's in her 20 years. And then hopefully I can start driving her in the middle of may. If I pass my test.

Grats Mty, I don't doubt yours is on top form, I'm sure it was a pleasure for them to work on. 👍
As for the tax, don't get me started. The environmental guise is bullshit, hence they will be charging electric from April. It's all £'s for their pockets & fk all back for us.
Did I mention that thanks to another f ING pothole I nearly collided with a BMW?
😡 Country

Cheers mate, i did put her through the carwash yesterday so she could have a good underbody wash. Think it always puts the MOT tester in a good mood when then don't have to poke around in mud and grime etc lol.

It crazy about the emissions crap. The 1.8t is clean enough that you can drive into the city centre without paying the clean air zone charge, yet then they put the tax up so much. Makes no sense as always!

No i didn't hear about the BMW but it doesn't surprise me, lucky you didn't hit it! I have to slalom around potholes daily, and my road is full of speed humps that mean i can't lower the car without catching the front bumper

Fingers crossed for you too. Is she gonna be your first car then? Bet the insurance will be pretty steep on that?

Yeah, first car. But I'm 44 this month. Got a quote for £130 pm. I can't wait to drive her, but before I do, I'm getting the underside ice blasted and protected. I'm going to try and keep her in mint condition, as she's not done a lot of miles. Had her since September, and have to stop myself from going for a spin

West country for you, we're more holes & bumps than actual road 😖 & yeah lowered cars don't get on well here, you have to actually stop & do 2mph to approach them but 4x4's& SUVs tow it round above speed limit 🤨
Frustrating times my friends, all we want to do is enjoy our cars & our lives😎
