Too wet to do any work on my car today for the moment. I was amused/disappointed to see the woman I helped fill up her oil about a month ago sat in her car with smoke pouring out the back and the check engine light visible on the dash when I walked past.

When I helped her out, she wanted my help topping up the oil. I couldn't understand how no matter how much oil went in, it never seemed to show on the dipstick. I was really nervous about overfilling the oil on someone else's car and so checked it every time she poured a little in. Eventually, it did show - after putting in the whole litre bottle. Told her she had a serious oil leak and to get it checked immediately - like, right now immediately.

It seems she didn't follow my advice.
Some people try riding their luck, to be fair this would be my sister all over then when work needs doing she wonders why more than one job needs doing cause she dint act when being told. Least you helped her out and tried your best 👌

Came back to the yard today and the scuttle panel was absolutely covered in pine needles from the row of fir trees it was parked next to (because wind). Cleared what i could but loads have fallen through. Job to do sooner rather than later.

Going to the garage tomorrow for the pre cat oxygen sensor. Fingers crossed that goes ok.

Right, headlining is out and the wiring has been trimmed back (removed rear wiper and screen heater ages ago).

Got a load of the Mk3 TT stuff together now so the prep begins

Well at least he has an eye for a smart motor for his age, and may need a pay rise for the insurance 😭

Went on a comparison sight and that was the only quote lol.
I sead that'll be 3 grand for the car and another 5 grand for whatever you hit.
He thought it'd be less as its only an 1800cc

Got the car up in the air for some measuring (see my updated build thread to see the questionable things I’ve been getting up to).

Whilst there I noticed that the disc is wearing funny. The outer face is a little rough, the inner edge has a (no more than) 5mm raised portion where it seems the pads aren’t biting right. That’s a pain in the rear end for another day but I’m guessing new discs and quite possibly new pads. Won’t be able to afford a fresh set of EBC Bluestuff (see build thread for reasons why) so looks like I’m destined for stock pads for the time being… either that or I’ll just run the discs and pads into the ground and worry about that later. I also checked the passenger side and that feels absolutely fine

Yeah my rear discs and pads are wearing crap as well. My mobile guy pointed them out and said they should be like glass, not grooved like they are. I don't go to the garage that fitted them any more, but it's just another reason to add to the list why I don't.

Just been out in the car and the exhaust started blowing. Front mounting bracket has snapped away. Just left it at the garage to be welded this aftenoon.
I think the car is determined to give me sleepless nights before its remap.

Now that’s a pain

I've been replacing parts, questioning whether the work I've done is causing problems etc. and I didn't check the only work that has been done by a garage because, well, they're a garage, right?

I'm away from home and can't source a new clip for a while, so I'm going to have to put a jubilee clip on it.

Thanks - that's super kind of you. Me being me though I've already ordered two new ones from eBay, which should arrive around Friday. If I have any issues with those though, I'll definitely be giving you a buzz.

I'm annoyed at myself as much as anything - most of the work garages do on my car is so shoddy that I should be checking it as soon as I get home. Just to break that clip, not replace it and not tell me. I even went back after because there was something off - engine stuttering and smoke from the exhaust... I thought the boost was lower than it should be, but it seemed to be holding boost so I didn't think much of it.

The oil change was easy though.

common fault that bottom pipe coming off intercooler, when i got mine and took it too garage for a second check that was the same hanging out like that, they sorted it and there was even one of them clips on top of the cover they took off and none were missing lol, so every cambelt change i ask them the check it, the oil that's probably due to its been in so long and oil breaking down, but if there is a head gasket issue look in the water expansion bottle for oil floating, bet engine gets quieter on next oil change though as then you'd fully cleared out oil oil as mine did after engine flush

What got to me was that I spoke to the person who did the work and he never mentioned the fact that the horseshoe clip on the pipe had snapped - just said that the fixed pipe had shown up other boost leaks and that they recommended I get them to change all of them. I originally took the car to them for diagnostics, but their scanner couldn't talk to my car, so the work they did was work I could and should have done myself and I'd have fixed the snapped clip and not had to go through six months of trying to track down an issue, replacing parts as I went, when I should have checked the boost pipe first.

When the oil had cooled down, it was back to the normal black colour. You're probably right about its age, and given I can get the Quantum oil for less than £30 compared to the Mobil 1 I was using before that was near enough twice that, it's much less hassle to just do an annual change.

All in all though, it's nice to have my biggest problem sorted so I can move on to more exciting stuff.

All that over a bloody clip thing is they seem pretty strong ,they must have a crap scanner if it can’t read vw , I’ve got an old Launch Creader V+ Only does the basics but tells you what the code problem is and that works great it’s also payed for its self, Quantum is allot cheaper now from when I was looking at oil, but that Mobil 1 is very good it’s just been not changed for ages, imagine if you put a cheaper vw spec oil in
