After looking around the workshop and wanting to sort stuff out. I thought I will cut the carbon sheets to make the door card
20210811_193105.jpg

I had these made at xsport. They are a carbon weave with a fibreglass additions layers for thickness.
I started off by making a template of what I want from card

Then layer it over the carbon sheet and marked it out.

Then done rough cut out So not working with a massive sheet to play with. Then done the near enough cut lol. Then the final sanding and rounding the corners. And the final article..
just 3 more to do. I went for the more expensive type with the curve at the top instead of the plane flat sheet.

Looking good. I’m guessing the weight difference between gutted metal doors and fibreglass isn’t that much, would that be right?

I think the fibreglass ones are still lighter. I was looking at them. But a lot of the build specs for different promotions say doors need to be metal frame and skin construction. So bonnet and boot are OK. But class depending it may well go that way. Or I buy another set of doors and gri d the skin off then I can cut out more from the inside as there is loads of double skinned bits

Sorry for the lack of progress. But due to work and private jobs I just haven't had time to get to the workshop. But I got an afternoon off.
On to the problem I have caused...... again.
After cutting to doors down to lighten them.
20210417_162313.jpg

Now there is no where to mount the door pull to open the door.
So bit of head scratching and pondering. I thought about a cable style set up.
So first got the door lock and cut off all I don't need
20211016_190139.jpg

I searched ebay and bought some mountain bike brake cable and covering. I then put it threw the latch so when pulled it opens. So I cut a hole in the carbon and then using bright covering to make it easy to see.
I then used a nutsert in the door.
Then crimped on a electial terminal with a 6mm ring to bolt threw hole.
Then mounted that

So with a gentle tug it unlocks

Another good update. So much labour time gone into this build so far. Have you heard of xsport racing in Basingstoke? My mate works there and he makes light weight boots and bits and bobs for this shape Leon.

The boot, bonnet, rear bumper, front bumper, splitter and the carbon door cards came from John. The rear quarter and door pods are from abs motorsport.
I am now looking at the fibreglass door skins... possible the complete doors. But problem being I not sure where I am going to race the car so staying metal at the moment till I find a home for it lol.
But I do say xsports stuff is very good and good price too.

Mate your gonna kill me. About 20 odd years ago... when I was doing banger racing I was always being offered scrap cars people had. Most where useless for bangers but worth it as a skip then scrap.. I picked up a Sierra saph with no engine or box. I got it of some young 20ish bloke.. with baseball cap and the "yes dude" speech... any this car had some sort of dodgy looking cosworth kit.. remember this is during the max power era... so there was hundreds of kits for all cars and stuff... it also had the 14" xr3i latace wheels. So the whole thong looked a cheep cossie wanna be..... so filled it full of car parts I didn't need when racing and then scrapped It.....
Here's the heart breaking bit..... I wasn't till a good few years later I discovered what a rouse sport cossi was..... and erm... that saph was one .... oops. Well it makes the others worth more

Bad times. It’s crazy that a car like that would lose all its value to wherever actually owned the car before you did. Mind blowing how many good classic cars must of had the same fate as that. I know of a story from my banger racing mate of a estate jag being used for a banger car only to find out it was the rarest estate jag that has ever been made by jag. He’s got photos of it on his tool box. Think it was one of three ever made in the Uk.

Again lack of updates....... but things are going on tho... a 2.0 tfsi crank is off being lightened, knife edged, semi dewebbed and balanced.
The car is booked in to some where to have the seat rails welded in as they seam they could be a batch to do.

My plan is when the car is away I am going to paint all the panels .... but let's see what happens lol
