Feeling pleased with myself on the 1.6. Got into the door, got the trim panel and inner panel off nicely. Untangled the window cable birds nest and figured out where everything was supposed to go, worked out how to rethread the cables if need be and identified one broken plastic bracket and missing metal bracket. Chucked out all the bits of wood and old cardboard from the inside of the door where previous owners have looked and not fixed it. Jammed up the window in place properly with lolly sticks until we can get new cables and brackets or the whole lot and do the job properly. Put it all back together with no odd screws left over, just one missing that I found in the long grass with a magnet. Not repaired but confidence boosted, maybe even enough to tackle the water problem with the same door in the TDi.

Just one snag, couldn't work out how to get the inside lock button back in but will figure that one out when we finish the job properly. It just pinged off so I didn't get a chance to look at how it goes in, oops!

Other half kept looking over my shoulder grumbling how complicated it looked and saying "back in the day" a lot but I say it's easy and clever, no more pesky plastic sheeting that never sticks back on, no more scissor winder mechanisms, and a motor that sits on the outside of a metal plate for easy changing, I'm all for it. And I have to keep reminding him about the oil filter and the mess we used to get into changing them!

Ah everything else mentioned so far except the cross-plys. I don't remember cranking handles or pop-out indicators either.

I guess you could figure out someone's age by what they remember!

Manic do you mean the Citroen suspension with those spheres?

The Marina suspension used trunions, which were even cruder than kingpins. The worst thing about my 1800 Marina was the oil consumption - 50 miles to a pint. The last VW Group car I owned was a Mk2 Polo, the one with no brake servo; which meant basically you had no brakes unless you stood on the pedal. Isn't nostalgia wonderful.

Agreed on the oil. I could drive from Bristol to Hammersmith where I had to park up, leave it for the day to cool, then fill it back up again to go home. 1300 estate in that tasteful "sandglow beige" and kept popping the head gasket between 2 and 3. My first car

Well for me I love old map stuff. In my time I have had 100a 120y salon and estates. 140j 160sss. 180b saloon and estates. 200l 240l laurels 280c saloon and estates and a few 300c. And a few toyota crowns mainly super saloons but had a custom estate too. Sadly I smashed them all to bits. Plus a few hundred other cars lol 15 years of banger racing I have wreaked a few lol

I've just had some fabricated to get around this issue.

335mm which is standard is too long and get bottom arm foul,
280mm is short to driveshfts foul arb
300 is the perfect length. I have 2 for sale if you fancy them?

the ride is great to say they are budget coilovers, its not bouncy if you know what i mean, there is still comfort as apposed to riding on springs and feeling every bump on the road. honestly i have a set of bc racing on my tiguan and they are as smooth as... ride wise. I'm not sure if i am that low to be hitting the ARB on the drive shaft as it hasn't happened yet, done about 200 miles too. would say ive dropped it bout 35-40mm all the way around.

i think our set ups on the tdi suspension are different as the ARB connects to the base of the wishbone, and is only about 100mm long and doesn't look like it could foul, nice work.

You reckon the same would apply to me? I have a TT arb and standard drop links, but I eyed them up the other day and I have a feeling the TT drop links will be too long. Havnt had a chance to measure them yet though.

More than welcome to try them dude.

Think it was the 3 deg extra castor that put my driveshaft further forward into that space envelope but its possible.

Kingpins use a plain bush, which is ok if clean and well greased. The Marina ( and Morris 1000) trunnions were like a large bolt and nut, the suspension leg screwed into a thread inside the trunnion. Apart from seizing up as you say, when the threads were really worn the trunnion ( with the bottom suspension arm attached to it) could fall off the leg on a bumpy road. Not good!
