shame as the major effort is the time/effort to lift the head... for the sake of £300 of rods I would have saved up, lived with the puff of smoke and done it all at once.

cambelt tensioner and brkt arranegement on these is hatefull is'nt it..
Wonder which blithering idiot at VAG designed that eh!! duh!

Yeah I know, but then you also have to buy new bearings, new piston rings, a tool to hone the cylinders, etc. etc. it all adds up.

The timing belt arrangement is a nightmare, turns a simple job into a major headache! Most things on the 1.8T engine all seem to be difficult and a pain to do.

Haven't had a chance to work on it, but tomorrow I'll be removing the offside wheel to get access to the lower stuff and will get the belt off along with the head. Yes I'll be removing the mount.

Some more stuff arrived today, mainly head gasket etc. (new stem seals were in the kit too - my god they are tiny!), all genuine VAG:

It would be a wise move to put some rods in there though rob...Just keep it off the road that bit longer...

I got mine from INA £272 posted to the uk....

Rob you wouldn't need to use new rings a slight hone would do but new ones would help..they are £72 for a full set
The OEM rod bearings from bdm are £25 for a full set..

Shame your so far away as you could of used all my bits...like honing tool and torco..

Sayin that pay the postage and il send them up and when your done send them back...

thing is you only needed to do the new bearings which is'nt big £
bores given your low milage would be fine, just reassemble it, it was fine before and would be after too..

shame.. its not a job you want to do twice is it

Why would he need to hone the bores on that low mileage?

And why would you hone it and not re-ring it?

So you're saying that I wouldn't need to re-hone or re-ring - just fit the rods with new bearings and that's it?

if it was fine before... ring wise, I would'nt hone it.. all I have done on this situation myself previously is lightly dull down the bores with 600 grit by hand.. reassemble and all was fine.

If I was fitting new rings, then I would deglaze/hone the bores so they can bed is

Are you re-ringing it?
