OK so today I began to strip everything down to get the head off, all going well so far, all that's left to remove is the timing belt and one nut on the exhaust manifold, then I can remove the head.

Can definately see oil in the valve area (looking into the inlet ports) so it's the valve stem oil seals.

The timing belt is a 'mare to get at though isn't it!?!

New stuff also started to arrive today too - new water pump with metal impeller arrived.

Yeah you need to take the Crank Pulley Of which has 4 alan bolts on it to then get to the tensioner and cover plate ect...

***DO NOT Take the 19mm bolt in the Large Crank Pulley off***

But you could always Cut the belt but move Cylinder 1 Down a tad to release any tensioner...Then remove the Pulley and Tensioner afterwards..

I done this and it was completly fine...but to get the Pulley of is a utter ****ing pain...

You must have been doing it wrong then.

Theres a VW tool that does the same thing to release the tension.

Its actually.... m5 x. 08mm
you need it to be about 50mm long.

Then from there you need a washer that approx 5-6mm id and about 12mm od because the tensioner has a fork.

Rob - are you fitting a new timing belt tensioner?

If so, remove the little timing belt tensioner pulley. Then remove the whole Tensioner and finally remove the tensioner idler pulley, then slip the belt off.

Dunno m8, they seem to be very hard to obtain due to the tiny intake valves.

OK I have the following parts coming this week:

New timing belt kit (belt, tensioners, etc.)
New water pump with metal impeller
New accessory belt
New set of head bolts
Rebuilt exchange head from Backdraft (skimmed, lapped, new guides, seals, etc.)
New head gasket set (head, head cover, inlet, exhaust, turbo gaskets)

While things are in bits I'm also going to clean up and paint alot of parts too, so will take longer than usual. :D

Not sure if it's of any help but i managed to make up my own tool for the inlet valves :)

Basically a 20vt spark plug socket which i then cut and grinded part of away so i could gain access to remove/refit the collets as needed, also being a 3/4inch drive i was able to use a tap and cut a thread into it meaning it screws to my valve spring compressor.

Not the prettiest tool but it's been used for 3 head rebuilds now without problems

Wow, so this kit allows you to replace the seals without removing the head! Only problem is you need compressed air which I don't have.

Nice idea Roly, thanks for the tip.

Only prices I've found are a place called 'Head.First' who for £350 will do a full rebuild on the head, including 20 new valves, gaskets, bolts the lot. Backdraft have offered me a freshly rebuilt head on an exchange basis for £250 + VAT. It has been skimmed, lapped, new guides and seals.
