hmm, you've got me thinking, maybe the slippyness of the carpark was fooling the TC system as both wheels would be spinning equally so there was no difference between them to trigger the TCS?
more testing is required i think. oh well

testing wasn't fun though, it was a thoroughly methodical and professional approach

The clunk and the feel of spinning up on a cattle grid sounds to me like axle tramp. This is when the driven wheels loose there grip and start to bounce on the road, giving the cattle grid effect. On rear wheel drive cars you can buy anti-tramp kits, used a lot on rally Mk1 and Mk2 Escorts, not sure if there is a kit to help reduce this on a front wheel drive car. Usually get tramp on drier roads, but if you give it enough you'll easily get it in the wet too.
I must admit the clunk noise is a bit scary when you have never heard it before and sometimes feels like it's one of the brake calipers falling off. I had this on my MG ZR and that didn't have TCS. My LC TDI has got ESP and TCS and it still does it.

think that might be the answer ya know, especially on the uneven roads around here adding to the bumpyness along with the stiffer sports suspension as i've noticed a few places that i have to back off more than usual as my car will skip forwards if i hit certain bits of road too quickly.
