Yes copy and paste between devices. Move is only if it's on the device. It's fallen into no man's land. Deleted from the card and not moved. Move we'll read as cut and paste. Generally not between devices and that's two devices.
I see. I don't remember what I did exactly: copied or moved. Im not sure if I want to try things with the new map card I have, lol

It should be OK. The CID on mib2 cards is fine for mib1. So yes. Europe 1 means it's a 16gb card... that's the zone Europe 1 in mib2 form. Mib1 cards are 8gb... the maps expand to need 16gb or you have to hack them. Mib2 that expanded to 32gb cards but packaged into zones.

Why I recommend keeping your existing card intact as a back up and using the 16 or 32 gb card as a new one. When you switch map cards in the units you do need to hold the on / off button for a few seconds to force a reboot else the unit holds the parameters read off the old card if the card swap is shorter than 20 minutes.

Ps note I did an edit to the post you replied to... mib1 used 8gb cards... 2023 maps in mib1 need a 16 or 32 gb mib2 card to use for the CID or you hack down the 2023 maps to fit. Getting last when I typed that.

So when my card arives, I am not touching the original and working mib1card. Do I format the new mib2 card then copy over the files from my mib1? I'm not really clear on what do do yet. Then do I just download the new maps and right them to the mib2 card?

DO NOT FORMAT THE NEW CARD (excuse the shouting). Delete the existing files on the card by selecting them and pressing the delete key. Once you have done that you will have a blank card ready to have the new files copied to it. Follow the earlier instructions for downloading at editing the new files.

My new card has arrived and I'm sorry for pesting again on here but there are somethings I am not sure of yet. My windows 11 PC and lap does not recognise any file system on those cards, how do I proceed to delete, copy or edit on my computer?
Also reading the linked guide which says '...used that SD for the firmware update, then copied the old maps back (before I found the newer maps). I don't recommend that though as it'll cause more wear.'
How do I do the firmware update?

And now ive put the unedited card back in the car and am getting 'unable to read...' error
Thanks

If it's a mib2 card it should be supplied with mib2 maps on it which you should see. If you aren't seeing anything then its a blank card. You don't need to format it which can be dangerous. So yes you should be seeing files on it else you have been sold a blank card.

Is there a chance that one or both of your computers have a virus? You should be able to read the cards. Since your car can no long read the original card it suggest something has happened to it. Either it has failed or the computer has done something to corrupt it which could be the result of a virus.

Or sold a blank map card by a rogue

If it's a 16gb or 32gb card it show it as such.

Assuming it was / is a valid mapcard you would have highlighted the files to delete - not reformat.

Take a copy of your existing card and then copy that onto the new mapcard to test. In the car it should recognise your maps you have copied across as mib1 and work. If it doesn't do this it's a corrupt card, return it to them.

If it is seeing your old map files then progress following instructions linked. Suspect you might not get this far.

I had put my original card in the puter first to copy files, the computer didnt recognise a file system. I the put the new card in to check if it would read different but it was the same. I then went back to the car where the issue was confirmed.
Ran a windows defender scan on the puter and found no issues. I also download another scanner (malwarebytes )and scanning now but nothing found.
Is the situation recoverable?

Something quite not right with your computer it should see the SD cards, new and old. Find another computer 🫣. Probably the drivers in Windows 11 for the SD card reader if built into the unit are not installed correctly or if it's an SD / USB external adaptor not working on the computer. It should see any SD card put in the slot whether a map card or normal SD card. BTW SD cards have a read / write lock but it's not that, that will be need to be clicked to unlock to write but won't be that if no SD cards are being registered as present. Some works computers do lock down external drivers to prevent data or programs being removed or installed on the hardware. That is an alternative a security lock being applied. That would be down to the security software put on the system.

The all important workaround is here is the resource section.

The workaround is this:

Workaround

Using a PC or a MAC ?

PC: 7 Zip is the preferred VW tool, other unzip tool including those built into Windows, can cause difficulties.

7 zip can be obtained from

https://www.7-zip.org/download.html

MAC: VW instructions

"ATTENTION

If the map update is performed using the Apple® OS X operating system you may find that
Discover Media does not recognise the map material or displays it incorrectly. This is due to
a lack of compatibility between the “7 zip” program and the OS-X operating system. In
addition, the OS-X operating system has a tendency to create hidden additional files on
external data media. We therefore recommend that OS X users use the “Keka” unzipping
program. We also recommend using the “CleanMyDrive” program to remove any hidden files."

If a MAC is used CleanMyDrive is run against the SD card after the maps are copied across to the SD card.

Having identified which unzipping tool is required and special Mac SD card cleaning required... free to proceed.

Steps:

  1. Download the latest standard MIB2 maps
  2. on the infotainment go to settings, safely remove, sd1 card
  3. remove sd1 card from glove box slot
  4. long press on the on / off to reboot it a couple of times
  5. insert sd card in to computer
  6. copy and paste all contents to a directory on your computer
  7. Format the SD card keep it as fat32 and leave format settings as default in file explorer (don't forget to push the card lock mechanism to off) (ditto in a MAC or delete all from the SD card)
  8. Copy the new downloaded map version to the SD card (after unzipping it)
  9. Replace /maps/EEC/EEC_WLD/OVERALL.NDS on the SD CARD with the one from the original SD card
  10. eject the sd card (on a MAC run CleanMyDrive on the SD card - then eject)
  11. Inserted the card into the card 1 slot in glove box whilst infotainment is off
  12. power on and go to navigation

The unit should then boot up into navigation. Note it does take a little longer first time round. If it refuses to boot up, press the volume button forcing a reboot, hold down until the unit reboots. If this fails it will be issues on the overall.nds file / copy issues. Revisit the process. Failing this restore the back up.

You will also need to pick up any POIs that you show on the screen since these will be dropped after a map update. Petrol stations, parking location etc.

Do not format the card in anything other than Fat32. The unit runs QNX so will not correctly see the SD card if it is not in Fat32 / cluster size gets tinkered with in a reformat. The CID is not deleted in a format that is outside of the area that can be addressed but reformatting has been known to corrupt the card.

I checked. As thought for TMC for the UK for the mib2 standard you still have to use the older Here Maps and this fixit to put you on Inrix:

For mib2 high you can use any of the maps and the change is done via coding:

If I want just the UK V12 Maps where can would I find it?
See the linked MEGA is the 13GB EU ones

Thinking to put old maps on a different SD card for traffic.

Shame theres no way to get traffic on latest maps for MIB2 Std.

The Mega linked one is the Here Maps one that is all Europe (and Uk) and fits on the 16gb card. The last release that support customisable TMC. Once it switched to TomTom on the standard mib2 you couldn't customise it to inrix. You also need those modules that were duly amended by a programmer to convert to Inrix from Trafficmaster.

The original Here Maps cartography covered all TMC systems at a low level. The TomTom one doesn't. Two best programming brains from Briskoda and Audi board developed that solution. The Audi owner seemed well versed in GIS and knew how the standard and high maps were put together at a programming level. So there was no way existing standard maps could be modded. It was built on user Australian work of getting Vag cars on the Ozzie TMC system which then had a bump in the road when Vag changed to TomTom cartography on the mib2 standard and compromised their mod. Briskoda brains took the Australian solution of washing the maps through the mib2 toolbox whilst the Audi programmer did away with that by producing the modded modules with the code change in them.

If you have lost your overall.nds file then the resource gives a link to one that works for all previous versions. It uses a facility that all old maps maps work with your current version but the workaround fools it that the new maps are the current... so current becomes V1... clear as mud. A discover along the road.

If the question is you have run out of the mega allowance, you just leave it waiting. Google Chrome perhaps rather thank Firefox that seems to trap you. Probably money spinners.

Resource:

So that is used if you value traffic reports over updated maps on a mib2 standard. You can make a second card and swap as it takes your fancy like today when one swapped cards when one was off the new road that had been built and wanted to get traffic reports again.

For missing overall.nds where you lost it by not reading the instructions - use the attachment:

In all cases a map card must be used not any old SD card. That's covered in the resource and n'th many times since.

Hi @Tell,

I've recently bought a V20 card off eBay as the car never came with one as it was "stolen" from the previous owner. Found this didn't work when plugged in so thought I'd give the workaround a try as the steps posted by yourself looked simple. As the card was stolen previously, I also used the V1 version of OVERALL.NDS to hopefully get it to work, but this also hasn't seemed to make a difference.

Any ideas of what the issue might be?

Many thanks.

Step 9. of the workaround people inthe past copy all files over rather than just that individual file. Possible not your case.

Advised not to reformat these cards. The cluster size should be 4096 and Fat32. In the past people reformat, get that wrong so it won't read the card in the unit. Some versions of Windows have been known to corrupt the CID part of the card. Early versions of Windows 11 where the cluster size got changed in the reformat. You just need to highlight the files and delete.

Attached is the VW manual on the file processing but you do need the workaround file copy. It won't work without. This just frigs the mapcare which was included with VW and Skoda but not Seat. Never sold in the UK hence the workaround.

Left side slot should be used for the map card.

  12. power on and go to navigation

‐----

The other possibility is someone has let rip with the unit with the mib2 standard toolkit and made a hash of the FeCs in the unit. By far the easiest is to use the workaround to update the maps not get into technically modding the unit.
