It isn't the transponder that is being programmed, it's the immobiliser control unit in the dash panel. The VAG diagnostic equipment or 1551 code reader provides the programming interface.

The only process I've seen requires that all the keys to be used on the car are present so that they can all be registered with the immobiliser one after another. I assume this means that the process starts by wiping existing keys from the memory. This would be good security, as it makes certain that the keys you have, and only the keys you have, are registered with the immobiliser.

Depending on the version of the immobiliser, they must also get hold of a security code from VAG, using the diagnostic equipment, which is sent directly to the equipment itself, not emailed or written down. Finally they have to make sure all the keys work. So there is a bit of work involved, and it could take up to an hour in some cases, I guess.

Did they ask you to provide all the keys, or just one? I know others have posted on here about having just one key added to the immobiliser, so I guess it must be possible, but the process isn't one I've seen published. Mind you, you don't want it to be easy :)

You I reckon you are right, any adding of keys must also disable any keys not present. The SKC was provided with the cars when new up until about 2002 - the reason given for stopping this was that this tag was not usually passed on to the next owner (or even retained by the first owner) - so VAG changed to this new "way of working". Remember the Ford and Fiat issues with the famous RED KEY - if you didnot have the red key a new ECU + keys was required and that cost quite a bit. I think that the SKC codes are only valid for 24 hours after they are requested and sent on the internet to the garage doing the coding. Your problem is probably that the dealer does not know you so can not "pre-order" the SKC code - so can only request it after you turn up and show all the necessary paperwork that ties you legally to that car.

I've had Ford and Vauxhall dealers cut keys that would not work - then discovered that for the same price they could have ordered up a proper Ford/Vauxhall key from the factory supplier - they always worked well. The dealers always claimed this was entirely due to the locks being worn - so why did the correct new keys always work! Have you tried getting your dealer to order in a precut "half switch-blade" key - there are available either together, or top half or bottom half.

I can believe that - the tag, of course, doesn't get kept with the keys, and it's the sort of thing that will slip out of a folder and get lost.

I'm the second owner of my Toledo, it was originally a SEAT company car, and I got it from The Motorist Center outside Canterbury when they were still a SEAT dealership (they're now independant, by choice, still a good place to go). With the keys I got a plastic tag with the chassis number on one side and seven digits on the other, arranged two and five e.g.

I've never had to use it, but I'm guessing that this is the SKC for my car.

i've been looking at my key and ones on ebay and figured it out *i think*

theres a pin holding the key to the flip round part... new ones on ebay come with a small pin, so im guessing i need to push that pin out and it will release the key?

yep going to a dealer.

they did the key cutting for me.
alass it fell down on teh coding.
they couldn't get it to work no matter.

one key was brand spanking new so that baffles. Anyway, it was £35+VAT (£41.12) to try and fail with cutting cost as well.

going to get a pair of hinckley when home and taken old ones out to check they same as those noted by r6 and try again. costing my head loads in grey mater and time.
if dealers just made a legit affordable flip key it would be so much easier for all parties.

i bought the seat on from fleabay and was advertised as never used, it had a blank blade so assumed was new
the other was an old vw one - so looks like having been used was fault

will purchase from hinckley tomorrow once removed an old transponder.
not doubting r6, but want to make sure that the one he said is correct, or can you doubly confirm volvic/lee69?

Oldman I assure you it's the right one. I've not bought from them but I have bought a new transponder. It is the AKTP2 you want :).

cheers r6, i wasn't intending question your knowledge, just didn't wish to waste the money on wrong ones from them.
will order today and see what goes then.

should be a simple sticky guide for this with a list of needs and actions so we don;t 6million threads, then again won't stop people missing it and starting another....

No I know what it's like getting the wrong item
Did it this week myself with bulbs after someone give some duff info.

There is a huge thread on the flip keys I think in the Ibiza section that covers pretty much everything but over time it drops down the forum pages and there is a lot of information to wade through.
