Try and borrow someone else’s car. You will find the love back in no time. When I drive the Mrs’s or a rental, I thank god I have something more at the tip of my toes.
They are an expensive hobby and at the end of the day if I went to get something else, what would it be?
I went through a change of career and had to start at the bottom again and thought I would have to get rid of the car, not sure how but managed to keep it and very glad I did. It does cost and there is always something that needs fixing or replacing but that could happen with any car.
There is always light at the end of the tunnel! (Especially at full boost!):p

Haha, I haven't driven anything else for a while mate. But it's not a bad idea at all!

Light at the tunnel indeed, I'll hopefully have it fixed soon and be boosting about again! :D

Give me the car and let me have a 'little' drive. I gaurentee you that once I start driving you will be begging me to hand the car back. This thing is your pride and joy :)

I've just been away for a week and been driving the wife's new polo all that time. Getting home and seeing my car put a big smile on my face and I had to take it for a spin. I was suprised how I'd missed it so!

When you have them running well they are fun these cars aren't they :)

Mine does make me smile. Need to get it fixed this week, it's not moved for a couple now. :ban:

Ok, so after 3 weeks of the car not moving an inch, I thought I'd have a look this afternoon at this issue that is plaguing the car causing me to lose the love for it.

I've had various random fault codes coming up relating to the throttle body, so I disconnected the battery tonight left it a bit, reconnected and then cracked on with a scan of the car which brought up this code 18012 Internal Control Module: output driver IC error p1604 - which would just not clear on vagcom! Did a quick google and a vwvortex thread scared the crap out of me as some guy on there is saying 'ECU knackered' etc and if the code won't clear you've had it... :-o

So I took the car out for a drive to see how it's performing and took vagcom in case it died on me. It's been over-idling and then suddenly dipping in revs, but tonight it wasn't so bad. I got it back and it smells like it's overfuelling a bit too. I got vagcom back hooked up and this time the 18012 code cleared.. Finally! I did a TB re alignment after and started the car back up, and so far so good. The idle is solid again and NOT dipping suddenly to the point where the car wants to stall, nor is it idling at 1k rpm which was really starting to concern me.

I'm going to get some carburettor cleaner this week and get the throttle body disconnected and cleaned right up at the weekend. It's never been done and the car is 8 years old now and tends to just sit around so I'm sure it needs doing. Fingers crossed she'll be alright now.

Even driving the car tonight made me grin a bit, I've missed the feeling of boost! Was a lovely sunset too..

I've been looking at properties for the last three days and am quite serious about one now, so I need to weigh up keeping it but if she works she stays I think :)

She has to stay mate, please don't be another bird to fall out the sky with this whole selling plague that's going around lately.
Glad you have got the car all sorted anyway mate, told you the TB needed doing as it does get clogged up over the years. 8 years old and these cars are not getting any younger :(

Something mad happened today - I drove the car..

Happy to report that she seems be ok at the moment with the nasty idling issue not playing up today. I've got to go out again tomorrow so I'll stop by in Halfords on the way back and get some carb cleaner to go over this TB with. It really needs to be done I think.

Hoping that my issue was down to the TB being out of alignment and the vagcom session last week has cured it. Time will tell! Soon got some love back today for it when getting that boost in hard! :D

Well I think the car is fixed now :D

I got hold of the carburettor cleaner this morning from Halfords and decided to get the throttle body off this afternoon inbetween all the motorsport on tv!

The TB was really filthy as expected, eight years of deposit build up around the butterfly part :ban:

Anyway, some pics.

Filth!

Better!

Once I re fitted it all and did a TB reset on vagcom, I took the car for a blast on some of my favourite roads tonight in lovely summer evening weather :) and it's a big improvement! The car feels very crisp through the gears when pushing on now. Glad to have finally done this and fingers crossed, sorted the intermittent issue I've been having.

Defo got the love back after tonight's blast :D

Glad too see you have it sorted Tom. Cant let the niggly things get you down, look at mine. Turbo went after having it only just over two weeks, managed to fit a replacement myself as cant afford a mechanic, just used public transport for a couple of weeks while I got the parts in, but still I have a few issues with it, but in the end they will get fixed sooner or later. Stay on the positive side of it you have you blood, sweat and a lot of hard work in your car. Probably 99% of this forum would love to have a car like yours with that spec on their driveway...js

Cheers mate :)

That's major bad luck with the turbo going on yours so soon after getting it :( But doing it yourself must have felt great to do. Your right though, over time you fix these issues as age starts to catch up with the cars - even if they're really well looked after it won't stop a sensor dying. It's just a part which can go over time. Fingers crossed we can both enjoy the fault free driving for a good while now!

When I do think of everything that's on my car I do realise it is worth keeping now as some of the parts are worth one fifth of the whole thing if you estimate selling it for book price around £5-5.5k now. People are telling me to keep it rather than sell and I can see their points now. Long term I want to take it off the road, get the bodywork sorted and an engine re build done with more power likely... That's what I would love to do and have an old banger to run around in alongside it. Will have to see how things pan out!

Seeing as the car is now behaving again, I treated it to a bank holiday clean today.

10 points to anyone who can spot the new addition in the engine bay pic :)
