Just renewed the tax on the car today, but only just....... I was very closing to declaring it SORN.

Currently it's not running right and has sat on the drive for a week doing nothing. Car will idle funny with the revs bouncing up and down and then last weekend it cut out on the drive. Fault code I'm getting is this:

17950 - Angle Sensor 1 for Throttle Actuator (G187): Implausible Signal
P1542 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent

Need to get it sorted and find the love again I guess.

I literally don't use this car barely at all these days, and to make that worse I've changed my gym so I won't even do those journeys. Should be good to buy a house next year which takes priority :)

That is far more important, and I'm getting bored of the car scene in general. I've only renewed the tax for 6 months with a view to selling up at the start of 2014.

Tom I completely understand where your coming from, but give it serious thought Before you sell it!

I have recently bought a house and generally lost interest in the car scene. The poor Leon hasn't had hardly any kind of care given to it in months as house stuff and other priorities take preference.
The car doesn't even get used, I have my Van for work and the gf's Focus for anything else.
I was seriously considering selling it as the extra cash would come in handy for the house and because I have no real need for it. After discussing with my other half that I was thinking of doing it she told me I "was mad" for even thinking of selling it. She said I would be grumpy and miserable if I didn't have my car sitting in the garage that I could tinker with and that I would do her head in,and you know what she's right lol.
Chatting to her made me see things in a different perspective. I don't really need to sell the car for financial reasons, and the car doesnt have finance or anything so it's mine. There are less and less of these on the roads these days ,and they are so cheap these days that it doesn't warrant selling. Plus on the rare occasion I do use it,it makes me smile, plus coming on here and seeing yours and all the other RR threads gives me inspiration.
I've now found a new love for the car,and once it's in the garage I have a massive list of things that I'm going to sort to make it up to scratch, plus it means I don't have to spend evenings with the Mrs Infront of the TV watching rubbish TV Shows lol, I can disappear into the garage lol.
You may be dis hearted with the car now mate, and you got to remember they are getting on for 8-10yrs old now so going to start having little problems but don't give up yet, you don't want to regret selling it after all the time effort care and money you have thrown at it.

You can become an adult with the house buying etc, but you can still have Toys to play with

So i'm not the only one falling out of love for my project then :).... Keep your chin up bud and get it sorted and enjoy.... if you don't urgently need the money from the car sale then 100% you'll regret it.

I sold my 911 a good couple of years ago now, mainly to use some money to go towards a deposit for a plot of land to build a new house on, well i struggled to get a mortgage on the land (need more deposit than a normal house) anyhow that died of death. I also never really used it about 3000miles a year.

I felt like i didn't need anything as a project, how wrong i was... not a fortnight after selling the porsche i was scouring ebay for a project, thats when i took on an "easy fix" of a friends old Cupra project with a smoking engine !!!!

I don't know about you but i constantly need something to be thinking about / tinkering with.... love the family etc but having something else to concentrate on in those quiet moments makes sense to me.
As the wife says i'm just a miserable c0ck when i'm bored with nothing to occupy my mind.... i think she means it in a nice way

Crack on bud and stop whining lol - it's not like you've spent 2 years building a car and still haven't even finished painting it ..... oh hang on thats me !!!!!

Haha, cheers for the advice Paul. I do completely understand your mentality though, as I know deep down I'm the same and need the car there to enjoy.

I've been thinking all sorts of things like selling it and then getting a cheap runaround for when I get the house, but then once there isn't much to do on the house, what do I do then? I always want something to work on and improve, I've cursed my car during the 3 years of the project but eventually it's turned out to be a good example I like to think with a massive spec. I want to do this to my house but I don't think I can let the car go!

Selling won't give me a massive amount more towards a house deposit and it's still a 300+ lb/ft car that makes loads of nice noises so I think I've talked myself out of selling it now!

So i'm not the only one falling out of love for my project then :).... Keep your chin up bud and get it sorted and enjoy.... if you don't urgently need the money from the car sale then 100% you'll regret it.

 Some great points buddy. I have been too busy for the car recently but found myself wanting to drive it a lot this past week and not being able to got me down about it and the stupid sensors these engines seem to be riddled with. I'm going to get it sorted and take it for one hefty boot to get the love back.

I'm just like you when I don't have something to tinker with as a project, albeit no where near the kind of project you have undertaken! As said above, I think I need to keep it or I am going to regret it. Why does it have to be such love/hate with these cars?

I have a feeling i may be heading in a similar direction Tom :(

I'm going to fix it and keep it now mate. Why you not feeling the love for yours?

Side note..

Just to add to this, another reason why I've thought about keeping this car is because I may get the engine re-built at some point with the TFSI turbo installed. For those that know or follow Nick Prawn's S3 thread on ASN, he is getting the K04 TFSI turbo installed onto the 1.8T block. I'm keeping an eye on the results and will see how much it costs as it would be cheaper than buying another car, but get a fair bit more power out of mine.

Tom have you looked at house or flat prices ?
I've got a very good financial adviser you can talk to if you want, he'll give you an idea of what you can and cant afford to buy.

Yep I have been looking on my rightmove app! But not done enough research yet tbh. It's whether I can get a small house in an OK area or whether I'll have to get a flat instead for the first time buy.

Thanks though mate, I may have to speak to him come nearer the time :)

Personally I would speak to someone sooner than later, at least it will give you an idea of what you can afford now, you may be surprised how little you can afford on your own.

I've done some quick mortgage calculations on Nationwide and it's not too sad, but it's looking more flat than a house. My mate got his one on his own in Orpington last year and another has just gone to Dunton Green on his own as his gf isn't moving in yet. I can afford what they have it's just wanting a bit more so I don't have to leave the car out on the road exposed

Just trying to put as big a deposit together as I can now, rather than save a set amount each month.

This sounds like a support group to me.... :D

I really hope we've got our cars in a couple of years time, as mine should be ready by then :) Maybe I'll be able to meet a few of you at long last :) We just need to keep each motivated by providing some nice updates.... Nothing like peer pressure to light the rocket... I seem to be sourcing big brakes ATM...

Hope you're well Tom?

Would be cool if we did all have our cars still in 2-3 years and met up James. I'm sure D.K's will be 100% carbon by then and yours will live in a bubble free from dust! :p

What brakes are you going for? I have thought about the K Sport 356mm 8 pots, but it's far too much money until I've got property sorted. Maybe once I've found my feet a bit!

I'm good though thanks mate, just need to get the car fixed to be fully happy

t0m we spoke about this many times, just look how much I regretted it. Anyway as a home owner selling your car isnt going to help you much in getting a house. As you live with parents save your money and you will get there quicker.

I imagine the LCR seems like a quick and easy deposit over how much you use it. Thing is in the long run when will you see the 5k back and what car would you buy?

If your leaving yourself carless with no mode of transport will you end up with something cheaper and then wish you still had the LCR?

If its a choice you make because you have another mode of transport - have cash ready for something cheaper but enjoyable (getting something later on HP is just not cost affective).

I've been a homeowner for 6 years, my car choices cannot cost over 5k now until my wedding loan is paid off in 2/3 years time in relation to monthly expenditure so think long and hard about what you will be left with and for how long once the car went and if its actually financially worth it.

That's what I'm doing Maz. I do think back to you regretting letting your MK1 go so it's got to stay until I get a place and then I'll have to see what I can afford to do once I have a mortgage. Oh joy

Cheers for the heads up re your Mrs being a chartered accountant. Could come in handy when the time comes :)

Good points made mate.

I would hate to get rid for a slower runaround that's dull and leaves me with little interest in cars.

HP isn't going to happen I don't think. I like to own what's mine and not have thousands of debt on a car. It's not financially worth selling after doing more maths yesterday so it'll stay but just be enjoyed and not tuned much more.

That is exactly how I have felt the last few months with the A3. Nice car but it is slow and I'm a petrol head at heart and it did leave me with no interest in cars at all, which is a shame. Onwards and upwards as of this week though!

With HP/PCP you do own it at the end once you finish paying if off.
It's a good thing to do these days as not a lot of people have £30k sitting in the bank ready to spend on a nice car. If you do you're one of the lucky few! There's nothing wrong with it but I do understand why you wouldn't like to take it out.

You will regret it if you get rid of Zorro anytime soon. He's a lovely car and a credit to you.

Hard to replace petrol & boost when you've had 200bhp or so Kaz! Lovely car the A3 though, but I know exactly what you mean.

I get why people do HP completely, and it suits some and not others. I will always try to work around it, but it will be hard once I've moved out for sure. I think spending a fraction of £30k on an engine re build and turbo upgrade on mine may be a much cheaper alternative to a new car with very little power gain, if any.

Thanks for the comments re the Leon. I just need to get the love back and take it for a run down the coast or something :)
