*Please Read - Seat Ibiza Mk5 1.6TDI SC Sport Candy White** Love/Hate/Cursed!

Guys,

Just new to this forum so I can't post any pics as of yet. I recently purchased a candy white mk5 ibiza sc with the 1.6tdi engine.

I stay in scotland and arnold clark brought the 10' plate car up from workington in cumbria for me, as the car came with bluetooth and panoramic sunroof, fr style mirrors etc etc.

Personally I love the car. I used to own a Mk4 Golf which meant the world to me, although it was getting on a bit and I needed something more pratical on the fuel for my work.

I am planning on getting some cupra lamps, fr grill, wrap the rest of the roof black etc etc all the current popular mods on here.

But, before I spend any money on the car I think it is cursed and I am needing help.

After four days of recieving the car, the engine management light started to flash followed by my emissions light. Seat - under warranty went to change the part but had ordered in the wrong one so they diagnosed and cleaned one of my exhaust sensors. 3 days after that, the light was back on and the senor was completly replaced. Four hours after the senor being replaced the same lights and diagnosis was back - faulty emissions senor. Seat then took the car back, changed the second sensor and half an hour after they had replaced the second sensor the lights were back on. They have now said they will change the third one as that must be the faulty one. The car is safe to drive.

In addtion to this, the garage had not securely fitted my mudflap or engine cover back on leaving them to rattle about as the pleased.

FURTHERMORE, my spare key is for a TOTALLY different seat.

I would not advise anyone to purchase a car from arnold clark with clear remarks to avoid Arnold Clark Ford Rutherglen and Arnold Clark Seat Alexandra Parade.

Oh, and I had just recieved a fine for doing 89mph on a 70mph.

Ive had the car for 3 weeks. Help lol?! I love the car though, not the luck its brung me :(

By this point you should have rejected the car mate and asked for a replacement. What type of driving do you do too? Is it mainly town driving or more a road type? DPF issues on these cars are pretty prevailant and you should have been advised or asked about what type of driving you do. From what I have read too the 1.6 is not the best diesel engine. Welcome to the forum any way and hope your issues get resolved.

As far as anyone is concerned the car was a used and i couldn't reject it. Wrote to the previous owner and he has had no issues with the car besides the dpf light. I am aware that town driving can bring this issue to attention but i am regularly on the motorway with my work. I average 60 miles a day both motorway and town driving. The lights first came on after i filled the car with shell vpower diesel and after its service at arnold clark. My dad was advised that the car has too be run on one certain type if oil and i have no clue what kind they put init. Overall im getting 440+ to a tank of diesel conpared with my 280 with the golf. I just wish the car wasnt fitted with a damn soot collector as this problem wouldnt occur, plus id be able to get the black smoke lol!

COuld be the wiring to the sensors shorting out, mine melted on the exhaust. Get badgering the dealers for some compensation for your trouble, i dunno, an FR grill or some storage boxes might be a suitable offer.

As above, if you're doing decent daily miles the 1.6tdi will be great for you, if you're mainly going round town, use the faults to get a swap for a 1.2tsi.

tut tut on the speeding etc etc lol.

welcome to the forum,

thanks for the replys. i cant wait to start moding the car - ill just need to get the teething problems sorted out! after the second sensor failed the mechanic guy came out n started pulling on the cables in the engine bay so possibly it could be the cable shorting out? how would i go about asking for a swap of car?!

haha, yea ino. they caught me the minute before i slowed down. gutting :(!

Might be worth getting them to check what oil they put in, it does need to be of a certain type (can't remember what atm) due to the DPF.

First of all, welcome to the forum. Always nice to see someone else from Scotland join. :)

Sounds as if compensation is definitely in order for all the hassle you've had to put up with! Don't let them off with it!

I bought my car from "Uncle Arnie", Linwood branch, but only because they easily beat any other deal going in Scotland. Don't plan to use them for servicing, warranty work or repairs there is a friendly Seat dealer locally that'll do instead. ;)

From the type of driving you appear to be doing, I'd be very surprised if the DPF unit itself will be the issue. Sounds more like an electrical problem - if (following the latest work) that's all the DPF/Exhaust sensors swapped-out and the issue is still there, then it has to be wiring or the ECU, I think. You'd have thought that the mechanics would have noticed melted wires when they were looking at the sensors, but you never know... I’ve never heard of incorrect engine oil giving this type of problem, but I bow to the more experienced views of others in this forum - it’s definitely worth getting that checked out. No idea of what the correct oil is, I'm afraid! lol

Hope you get the problem fixed soon, mate!

Sorry to hear of your probs. I was looking at arnold clarks in alexandria parade. originally looking at a 1.4 chill but started to think about the 1.6 tdi as I have a diesel just now and like them. starting to think twice after reading a couple horror stories.
so which one is better to go for 1.4 petrol or 1.4/1.6 diesel. are the cars all kitted out with vw engines.!!!

There is nothing wrong with the 1.6TDI don't be put off by this thread. I think this thread is more to do with a poor dealer than a problematic car.

I have had my 1.6 TDI for eighteen months now, done 21,000 miles, no visits to the dealers, no DPF lights/issues and in all likelyhood I will be buying another one, an ST this time though as I need a bit more boot space.

What Biker says is largely true, but in fairness the 1.6TDI engines do seem to have more problems than they should. Most of the issues however surround the DPF (soot filter) in the exhaust system.

G1FEB seems to have been particularly unlucky with his car and I wouldn’t say his adventure is representative of what most 1.6TDI owners experience. The dealer really should have nailed his car's problems long before now...

If you do a lot of low speed stop/start town driving and no regular A road or motorway stuff, I'd stay away from the diesel. The DPF seems to give a lot of problems if driven mostly in an urban environment. HOWEVER, if you do a fair amount of motorway (e.g couple of times a week or more) driving or you don't do a lot of crawling around in cities, then the DPF issues are pretty unlikely to surface and the 1.6 TDI would definitely be a good option if you get it at a good price. I have a 2.0TDi and so far (touch wood) I’ve not had any problems so far in the 2500 miles I’ve had it.

In fairness to Seat, the DPF issue does affect other makes of car too so it isn't as if Seat is that much worse than other diesels out there.

If you are unsure about a diesel, why not consider a 1.2TSI engine? It is almost as economical (in real life driving) as the 1.6TDI but is a bit quicker and has no DPF to worry about. Only problem is that they are fairly rare at the moment if you are after a used car.

The 1.4 petrol engine is a tried and tested unit. General consensus seems to be you'll get fuel consumption in the low/mid forties. Apparently the 1.4 (non TSI) engines aren't the most exciting units but they don't seem to break much!

Use my Diesel sport as a driving instructor car. NEVER had the dpf light on. Has run like a dog during Regen. Complained immediately and only recently have SEAT come up with a 'fix'. bought it 10/12/09. has now done 56K. No other probs other than seat pad bolsters deforming and they replaced both under warranty after I complained to SEAT HQ. Local dealers chief tech said I was getting into the car incorrectly. So asked him to show me the page in the handbook and demonstrate correct procedure. He Declined both.
All good now.
Pupils like it, Fuel consumption about 45mpg. :( no where near what is in manual. Have got close though but gosh it was hard work achieving it..............

Would consider another one but they are looking much more pricey now.
