Over Heating Problems

Hi

I have a 1.4 beeza 2001 done around 45K.

Was driving down the A3 and my temp gauge went sky high and started beeping, pulled up at the nearest garage and there was a slight amount of smoke coming from underneath, let it cool, topped up my engine coolant and trundled home.

The garage has said my head gasket is buggerd and it needs replacing and its gonna cost near enough 700 quid!

Just wanted opinions on if this sound right? seems a bit drastic to me! could it be a simpler problem does any one reckon? am i being taken for a ride?

Cheers

Sounds like the old VAG water-pump problem (impeller falling off)

You need a breakdown of the work really to make a judgement

£700 to supply and fit a headgasket and timing kit doesn't sound extorsionate

+ if that's factored a new engine cover (£50??) new coolant pipes etc etc ... have they said what it's likely to have been caused by ??

when the head gasket goes u need to have the head skimmed because it will warp because of the heat, i know a place that does this for £25, cambelt kit and waterpump for a ibiza 20VT is £98 from GSF, so bound to be less for a 1400??? plus new oil filter etc, head bolts etc, no more than £250 and ul have a nice bit of change with that id expect so wot u think......... id try and find a machanic who fancys a hobble or try a different garage, offer to pay cash so no VAT etc and u should get a much better price.

Thanks i will shop around, i only use that garage cos its very local so its convinient! By the sounds of what u guys are saying i could get it a bit cheaper, so will def try, and the cash payment sounds like a good trick! didnt know that one.

No they havent said what it might be caused by, but he did say the coolant pipe has been leaking and someone has previously tried to glue it and done a botch job! I gues the bugger who sold it to me may have known about heating problems.
