Car is completely standard. Not had any work on it done in recent weeks either so bit out the blue...

Without plugging the car in its difficult.
The only other thing to check is the dipstick properly in?
Not much more you can do after that without removing the engine cover etc.

Just as a final thing, should there be a change when the MAF sensor is disconnected? if the car was fine would disconnecting it show this sort of fault? Or should disconnecting the sensor make it better by forcing the ecu to read a default value?
Otherwise I'll have to find a vag com guy in the area to have a look or find a dreaded dealer!

Ok least that may have got rid of another potential issue.
Hopefully something like idle control or something, have do some searching for a plug in man!

So by chance i had a guy at work with a fault reader. Not the full Vag-com thing but enough to produce the code P0171.
I have looked this up and it says that this is a -
Fuel Trim; Bank 1: System Too Lean
Possible Causes
Mass Air Flow Sensor (G70) defective
Intake System Leak(s)
Removing the MAF sensor made no difference to it running bad so is this a sign that the MAF could be gone?

That puts us back to where I said.
Either faulty air flow meter or leaking pcv valve.
You need the engine cover off to check the pcv valve though.

So just incase someone comes looking for the same iSsue here was the answer to mine....
I took the car to AMD @ Woking where Simon took a look and said it was either the throttle body or airleak....today he. Had the car to do the work, he started by cleaning the throttle body, he noted it wasn't to dirty and refitted it, ran a base cal on the body but the problem persisted.
He then had to check around for airleaks, eventually he found it was the pcv value, replaced it and car now runs sweetly once more...much to mu relief.
Despite taking a while to get open slot with Simon he found and sorted the issue quickly and was resonably priced if anyone in the area needs work doing.
Thanks to those that posted there help, it pointed me in the right direction.

It didn't show pcv value fault on the vcd package...it just gave a fault of lean bank 1 fault. I was looking at throttle, MAF and as Marshall mentioned possible pcv which after amd Woking cleaned the throttle body (with is good maintenance as I understand) he diagosed the pcv....replaced for £22 plus labour.
