Leon FR CR Turbo problems

Hi all,

I hope someone can help me. I have a 2009 Leon FR CR170. I've done about 400 miles this week, most of which have been faultless.

However, today after about 200 miles I had a warning message flash up. I can't remember exactly what it said, but something along the lines of 'engine fault, garage inspection' or 'mechanic inspection'. Along with this the orange coil light came on and my turbo was disabled.

I pulled over at the next junction, turned the engine off, then back on. The light had disappeared and the turbo was back. However, my turbo prior or this event kicked in between 2400 to 2600 rpm, but now it doesn't seem to kick in until 3300 to 3500 rpm. There is very little power low down the rev range.

I tried searching but to no avail. I reset the ecu by disconnecting the battery but that hasn't had an effect.

I know today was extremely warm, and a lot of time was spent in slow/stop start traffic if this may have contributed.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

Neil

Could be a faulty electronic position feedback sensor on turbo actuator.

Go for diagnosis readout in a reputable workshop....

It's called limp home mode. It could be any one of over 1000 errors, you need to get the error code and then you can come back here or google it for more info on what to do.

VCDS would be your friend here. You can get a rip off copy of VCDS for less than what a garage will charge you for just one plug in.

Update...

I had my car plugged in to VCDS thanks to brad_barker12. Can anyone make sense of this readout please:

This sounds very similar to my 59 plate golf cr170
Looking at the error you have you'd say it had a boost leak although mine hasn't.
I checked all the pipework and the famous turbo position actuator but all was ok.
I left mine with the battery disconnected when on holiday and came back and it seems better but not right.
My mpg has suffered and it just doesn't feel right.
Are you mapped or standard?
How many miles has your car done?
Mine now has 35k on it and I'm trying to get mine to standard for diagnostic purposes ie to rule out the map

Thanks for the reply Marshall,

Mine is standard with 84,000 on the clock. I have reset the ecu but that had no affect. I'm planning on changing the fuel filter at the weekend as this has been suggested as a possible cause. I'm not sure if this could be related, but a buzzing/clicking noise developed a few weeks ago, although this is only noticeable with the window down so it may just be that i never noticed it before. I believe this is the fuel pump, and Seat have now made it a 'characteristic' rather than a fault. I'll change this too probably because it drives me mad.

I'll inspect all of the turbo hoses too, i'm hoping it is something simple like that.

Mine recently developed that buzz as well. Only really noticeable when driving in town with the window down.
When I researched it everyone says its a characteristic and they start doing it after approx 15k

checking two separate forum sources I have found:
"I would say 90% of 170PD TDI's I have tested with p0299 has either needed the manifold vac actuator or there has been a masive boost leak somwhere like holes intercooler or split hose (you would surely hear this, loud hissing on boost)"

and

"Well, after pulling the motor cover to change the fuel filter. I found the problem. I had checked all 3 intercooler hoses, but not the hose that connect the plastic tube at the back of the motor to the intake manifold. It had a nice split in the bottom of it."

...seems pretty likely that there is a tiny leak somewhere. WHich would account for a lot for you as well Marshall. Even if you're not getting P0299

I've spent hours researching and investigation and the cr 170 doesn't have an inlet manifold vacuum actuator as its now electronic and mine works smooth as silk.
I've had all my intercooler hoses off and tested and on logging with vcds the car reaches max boost if 2601mbar by 2250rpm.
I want mine back to standard to see but my mpg is pretty poor since having my map flashed last Tuesday and I get a stutter/hesitation at low speed rpm like 25mph 3rd gear.
I was blaming the heat but need it standard to run for a while so to compare/eliminate any map issues

I've only seen one CR turbo have issues and it was because the diaphragm had a hole in it, replaced the turbo and its been fine ever since.

Symptoms were irregular boost and the eml every now and again.

Thanks for the replies,

I'll rule out fuelling and splits in hoses this weekend, then if the problem persists i'll look at the turbo. Is there anything i can do with VCDS to pinpoint the issue?

Not really. You've done all you can do.

You could monitor actual boost pressure and see if it drops when holding revs.
So, start logging, take it to 3.5k revs or so (boost range) and hold.
That would indicate a leak.
