r smith can i ask you a question?before the 3"tip did you had surge problems?or you had surge in both tips. i am running the same specs with you and i have surge .if i replace the 3" tip with my old forge tip do you think that surge will stop?

Hi Ilias_c,

I didn't get surge with my old samco silicon TIP, but i did get some cavitation but this was minor compared to the surge, surge is way more of a seriuos isssue an di could run higher boost with the silicon TIP.At the moment i still have the 3" TIP on but i cannot run more that 1.1/1.2 bar before 4300rpm.

Did you have any logs i can look at?

Hello all,

Sorry i haven't update this build thread in a while, it seems most of my discussions seemed to have moved here. http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/showthread.php?t=298188

The long and short of it is i am having nothing but problems with my CR Turbo, its surging badly on WOT which is a serious problem.

I have spend the last few weeks trying to get CR to replace it without any success, even though i bought the turbo new and had them hybrid'ise it, so it cost about €1200 delivered, its in effect faulty and not fit for its purpose, CR are unwilling to accept this or offer any decent customer service, but i have moved on from this.

So know i am in a situation where by i have sent them a spare OEM K04 ( at my own cost) for them to recondition and turn into a hybrid that hopefully will not surge.
If you read the thread above i have clearly proven through calculation why and how this turbo would never work properly on my car (1.8T BAM).The positive side of this is there will be a new Version 2 of the CR hybrid turbo that should be very good indeed if it works, we will see.

I will have the new turbo fitted hopefully late next week, so peeps if you thinking about a Hybrid turbo, my advise would be to avoid CR at all costs until the problems with there K04 hybrids are resolved, keep an eye on the thread for update, its a good read if you have the patience, plenty of learning to be had in there.

On a good note, i bought a Liquid gauge a few weeks ago, very impressed, will get some pics up soon.
Next mod will be( and this is to tide me over while i get the turbo sorted) is a powered coated rocker cover, new coilpack wire harness ducting from a MKV along with new braid fuel hoses, finishers and N249 Delete and just other OCD $****.

LOL, Where's Dan, i might have some hat eating to do yet.

Mate real shame about this situation. I have been following the above discussion and it does seem to be getting somewhere slowly. Lets see what they can come back with. Fundamentally a issue has been spotted with the current design and they should hold their hands up and say yes we understand and get to it fast to come up with a solution. Hope it all gets sorted and your happy with the finishing product!!

Cheers mate, yeah there is a fundamental problem with the turbo that CR will not admint to, at least by me running into the issue it will help other peeps out and along with a new turbo design, it will be interesting.

It is moving slowly but i am determined to push this hybrid over the 335bhp mark which again should give the hybrid a bit more respect.

Update Hybrid V2, case, LG, Temp sendor, N249 delete resistor

Righto Lads, some more updates for your all.
After a few weeks of debate with CR turbo they agreed to send me a new turbo with significant modification to firstly reduce surge but at the same time flow as well as the version 1 of the hybrid.

Pics below: The wastegate is machine ported to a much larger diameter, the turbine has been cut back and instead of using a Billet 2283 compressor wheel they opted for a cast 2280 compressor wheel, in addition to this i had the exhaust inlet on the turbo ported to mate with the 034 K04 manifold and offer maximum flow.

So far testing on this turbo has been disappointing, it has not flowed more the 254g/s (317bhp) while that in itself is very good, we are of the opinion we can get more out of these hybrid's in the region of 330-340bhp. One big thing that stood out is the 9psi actuator is no where near strong enough to handle the extra pressure on the wastegate so during our testing the wastegate was actually opening and slowing down the turbine and therfor not allowing the turbo to reach its maximum flow.

BTW the 440cc injectors were maxing out up top so i slapped on a 4bar FPR as a cheap fix,,,,nice

I have ordered a new 1 bar actuator from CR so i am hoping this solves the issues, time will tell but hopefully i should have it by the weekend.

Pics below of the new turbo: it looks the business at least.

Some other stuff i have on the go, My front wish bones are fcuked, i am on not sure what to go for to replace them, OEM, super pro or powerflex, my coilovers are harsh enough so any suggestions are welcome.

I received my resistor today for the N249 delete, along with this i ordered a ducting for the coilpack harness, this is from a MkV golf but i hope to fit it to my car, it should look nice.

An my favourite little mod, the Race diagnostics liquid gauge, this think is deadly for real-time data about the car, i only wonder why i didn't get once sooner.

Comments, abuse welcome as always.

P.S anyone have or know if a BAM rocker cover for sale? i need one to polish up.

i'd get some super pro wishbone bushes, had them in mine and they werent to harsh, i had coliovers on aswell. And they arent to hard to fit all you need is a vice.

hope you get some decent power out of it!!!

Said this before but definitely most interesting project on SCN at the moment and I don't even own a petrol car.

The liquid gauge is very good. I am assuming its quite simple setup i.e. just wiring to ODB port? Is this more accurate than a normal boost gauge in your opinion?

Rocker cover - think the type of metal it int good for polishing as it may rust easily? DK may be best person to ask for this.

Wishbones go for superpro. Better than powerflex especially in terms of fitting as better design. Go for their full dogbone setup too.

Maz

P.S. What a mental ruler!

I've just fitted powerflex bushes to mine, would highly recommend them, got the powerflex DBM too. Brilliant modification.

It's a shame to see the trouble you're having with the turbo, must be costing a fortune to get to the root of it all, respect to you for not giving up though!

Cheers, The LG is super easy to fit, you would do it in 20minutes, it just connects to the ODB,the wiring goes from the rear of the unit to over the steering column and through the side of the center column, Its super accurate, it will give you the same readings as vagcom does, i never really trust mechanical gauges they are in the ballpark but not accurate like the LG.

I already have a DBM, i ended up getting a good deal on the powerflex bushes so i will give them a go, if they are too harsh it will just give me an excuse to get better coilovers.

Yeah its a lot of trouble alright but someone has to be a guinea pig for this sort of thing, the aim is (when we get all the problems sorted) to create a checklist for all the other peeps who want to go hybrid, so basically get this,,, this and this and you will achieve ???BHP, that said i hope the new actuator sorted the WG problems out this project has already hit the €4k mark!!!

On another note, i did my N249 delete today and also fitted the MKV harness ducting, i think it looks a lot smarter, once my rocker is painted black i think it will loook the business. Also i have not seen anyone else use this harness, so it may be a first on the LCR>

I need to remove the wiring harness for the injectors now and route it underneath the intake manifold out of the way.

Some before/after pics ( PS the BB torch camera is shite compared to the Iphone 4)

Please excuse the dirt of my bay, it has not been cleaned all winter:(

Before:

SouthTipperary-20110203-00029.jpg

Found loads of these wires exposed on the harnes, WTF, i taped them up.

IMG-20110203-00031.jpg

N249 Removed and ducting applied to the harness, this was very tricky, patience is required.

IMG-20110203-00034.jpg

After:

IMG-20110203-00039.jpg

Close up, I completely stipped out the N249 wires, clipped them and soldered them to a resistor which i taped up to another large wire ducting, you would not see it unless you go poking about.

IMG-20110203-00035.jpg

So there ya go, thats what i was up to.
