i have only had one propper blast against an e46 m3 (and it was a convertible) and it was from 80 to silly speeds... had to reach for 6th! (private runway ofcourse!)

lol u may think this about my e46 m3 meeting, but i know 100% he was trying as he came looking for it... i over took him earlier before the motorway (which he didnt like!) then 10mins later he comes flying up my a*se!

edit: i wonder wat times they get at pod?! what they do 100mph in? 13??? i know off the line they are obviously much better then FWD. but thats were we are strong... once rolling!

Thought you said it was a private runway:banned: lol

i would say you stood more of a chance than cuprajay you have 220bhp in a car that weighs the same as my front 2 wheels i just find it hard to believe he has found it that easy against M3's if he has done then fair play but i just cant see it

Have no idea what an e46 M3 looks like... so I couldn't say, but judging from what you've just put, I wouldn't stand a chance I dont think

just found this... http://www.stevecarter.com/m3bmw.htm ...

(figures from 'Autocar')

3245cc 6 cyls in line - 343 bhp at 7900 rpm (269lb ft)

0-30 mph 2.0 secs. 0-60 mph - 4.8 secs.

Standing quarter mile 13.4 (107 mph at 1/4 mile)

30-70 mph 4.3 secs - 60-0 mph - 2.6 secs

23.7 mpg (average)

Weight: 1570 kg

'Top Gear' review of the BMW M3 (May 2001)

"First, let’s just assess what we’ve got. Rear-wheel drive? Check. 343bhp? Check. 269lb ft of torque? Check. 0-60mph in under five seconds? Check. Six-speed gearbox? Check. Big envelope stuffed with money in the glovebox? Check. That’s the car then: the all-new BMW M3. Yours for £38,500; ours to drive back to the UK from the launch in France. But not straight back.

so with 343bhp and weighing 1570kg this means a basic e46 bmw m3 has 218bhp per ton

if my lcr is 280bhp, weigh bridge said it was 1300kg then my power to weight is 215bhp per ton.

and i had a play with the convertible which is heavier, so this seams bang on, a very close encounter! :)
(dont forget i should have a good 40lbs more of torque lol)

as said tho, off line would kill me i think! :(

Can your mate drive...?
Just that, I would expect to struggle against a stage 2 VXR and i'm running 272bhp 295lb/ft.. So god knows how you manage it.. Fair play though...
As for M3's.. Anything from the E36 Evo upwards, you should not be leaving mate.. Unless the driver can't drive for ****.. My old man had a E46 M3 and above 90 it use to leave me quite comfortably...
Don't fprget they are a revvy car and have to be thrashed to get the most out of them.. 8000rpm redline..

As i said, im pretty sure its down to how leons produce the power..from very low rpms...where as the vxr doesnt come onto boost properly until 5500 rpm.

As for e36 m3 evo..i tried to play with my m8s..and it pulled away comfortably. As you said, anything e36 m3 evo up does have an edge. All accept the e46 m3 convertable. Quite frankly found them very shocking. I came accross 2 in one day, and wasnt impressed.

If you read my posts properly mate..I said an e36 m3 wasnt a problem. And i did do quite well against an e46 m3, but the road was twisty, and he backed off for corners..It could have gone much quicker around them. As i said, if i payed 40k for a car, im sure id back off aswell.

Only other thing, is e46 M3 convertables are quite surprisingly slow. Must be down to all the extra weight.

The key to the e46 M3's quick 0-60 is the RWD factor..Makes such a huge difference when launching. I had an older m3 for a bit, and how it launched off the lights was awesome. FWD cars suck for launching. It helps alot if the wheels are pushing the car as apposed to pulling it.

But once rolling, those m3's have about the same torque figure as a mildly tuned leon..and the leon does weigh a little less. So im guesing thats where battle lies.

Yeah your right i do apologise i guess its the amount of people who come on here claiming they have destroyed M3's i guess i just got carried away didnt read it properly and assumed it was another one of those, also i didnt know the difference between the e36 and the e46 till someone posted up the pics

Think the key difference is 71 bhp difference between the 2. E36 m3 has 276 bhp. E36 evo has 331 bhp.

E46 m3 has 341 bhp. Which, is a hell of alot. Not much torque though. :(

IMO 100+ is where M3's really come alive.. My old mans certainly romped on.. I remember us racing my mate in his 370bhp Evo VI from about 80+ and my mates Evo took from 80 to about 130 to pull one car length on us, then it started to go back in the M3's favour..
You need a decent driver in one, plus if it's SMG it'll be slightly slower..
The 0-100 on them is quoted at 11.8 by the way..
