Small update: According to Andy at Rosstech the 1.8T can handle up to 12 degrees of retarding on the ignition, so you should indeed be perfectly safe ^^
He recommends to aim for a rough 3 around the board. Too much and the engine will start retarding heavily, as in a 12 degree retard, which is prolly around 20-25BHP lost the second it starts knocking.
As far as I can figure out the ME7 ECU our cars run will advance ignition carefully by 0.75 degrees every second until it sees knocking again, then fall back another 12 degrees, and so on. This will usually be seen as a choppy dyno run when reaching max boost.
The tolerance that will trigger that 12 degree retard would appear to be customizable by whoever wrote the software for the ECU, as in, the pro tuners who know a lot more about this than us
Dunno if they actually fiddle with the tolerance for knocking, I wouldn't.
