Yep those retaining clips are a real pain! Oh-so-simple when you've got em figured out, but until that point.....

Didn't have any problems with the nuts at the bottom of the steering column, apart from dropping one into the rack! Took five minutes to get it out!

Just reading your thread mate and you talk about removing the shear bolts...which ones are they?

I'm just trying to remove everything else whilst waiting for someone to come round with something to get this nut off

There's two of them, going up into the top of the dash, one on either side of the steering column. They're what holds the steering column up. The head is sheared off when the bolt is tight, leaving only a 'button', like in the left hand side of this picture:

They're not easy to get out, I resorted to demolishing the heads with a dremel. Then the steering column could be dropped down, exposing the thread and they could be undone.

And to add to the fun, on the left one, I couldn't get the dremel in facing the normal way, so it had to put it in backwards with the disc facing me!

Enjoy :)

That is actually a good idea.

Best idea, unfortunately i don't have to tools or the knowledge to weld

Yep I agree, that probably is the best idea. Like you though, I dont have the tools. I have the knowledge as I did it as part of my apprenticeship.

does anyone know with the shear bolts if there is a washer on them?? As I've got rid of most of the bit like the pic above that alpinewhite attached, but theres a bit behind it like a big metal washer that looks like its part of it?

here we go! you can see the metal bit that surrounds the like button head, from the pic it looks like a washer but as I've dremelled the button bit off it seems to be part of the bolt?
