Been cleaning the engine bay & the more I clean, the dirtier everything else seems. A FFS moment.
Also, not today, but recently I spotted a fellow black MK1 pulled over with hazards on. Of course I pulled alongside to offer help, but the dude was already filling up from a can. I laughed & said the cars were heavy drinkers & then my fuel guage hit 1/4 & beeped loudly. It was a funny moment, like the cars were taking the piss out of us 😂
Lol would have been funny you trying to save a fellow car guy with taste lol and then asking him to go get you a can of fuel. Talk about irony 😆

Collected my car from the garage after a major issue…

So last month I was returning from Goodwood FOS having taken the Cupra on its longest run out since I’ve owned it. Was running beautifully overall until I got to 5 miles from home. A bit of an odd noise coming from under the bonnet when car idling at roundabout after a few miles on M4 but seemed to still pull ok. Wondered if aircon clutch was rattling. Made it to 2 miles to go, at 30mph the engine died and we coasted to a halt. Very strange…

coolant ok
oil ok
Battery ok
nothing dripping out of/under car

cranked it… ooh man I don’t like that sound.

Cam belt was done 3k ago and moved the cover slightly at top and could see belt so maybe not that

Pushed car off of road into a kind soul’s driveway overnight until it could be recovered.
Next day got it recovered by mechanic mate to garage. Initial assessment was cambelt issue, along with all the drama of it being an interference engine :-(

So it seems as though the tensioner had failed and bolt attaching it to head had sheared, belt partially shredded and I guess had skipped a tooth initially (when that noise occurred) and then went more than a bit out of time and boom.

Credit to my local VW group specialist garage who have put the car right and it now has a shiny new head on it and lives to fight another day!
Glad all is OK with the motor bud, engine noise is the nightmare of all nightmares 😳.

It would have been a mare for sure 😂
Luckily the dude seemed cheered up by hearing my thirsty boy moan; after all, we all have a love/hate relationship with these cars.

Indeed, I don't think these cars would have reached the 20 year benchmark if it wasn't for us loving them the way we do.

How many left has just been updated (Q1 2024 are the latest figures).

Here's the Cupra R:

959 on the road (-102 on last qtr)
1063 sorned (+5)

So a net 97 deaths ☹️
Always wondered how many are about, even though that's a low number I honestly thought they was less just as you never really see any, think there is 2 maybe 3 where I am that's including mine. This shows we are a lucky bunch that have them.

A very sad statistic 😞
Unfortunately I think we've all seen their numbers dwindle on the road & rapidly over the last five years, even on this forum.
I have fond memories of seeing several on the way to & from work each day, & of course the respectful flash of the lights.
However, one thing that will never change is how awesome they look on the road & their ability to piss off the posers 😁🤗

Agree with you buddy it's sad indeed 😟, use to have the headlight flash back in the day with the scobby not had the privilege with this yet lol. What's sad as well seat owners have always kind of been looked down on for buying the cheaper vw option but if it means us lot get to appreciate them then I'm ok with that 👍

Yeah, I know what you mean.
I used to park next to a Golf R & it cost a bomb, but it just didn't have any character, just typically boring vw. Mine also sounded better 😁

Respect to the scooby, always had good times around these & stunning to see on road or track 👍
