Day off work so took it out for a drive, thought I'd head to a local specialist for a chat and some parts. On the way there I wound down the window

*cruchy sounds as window descends*

Huh... ok, wind that back up

*more crunchy sounds and a little movement*

Oh f*#£.

So got back home, pulled my windswept locks from in front of my eyes and pulled the door card off.

Welp, there's yer problem mister.

After some contortionism to get at the brackets for the glass, pulled that all out and then got into it a bit more.

I found oil leakage, woohoo. Can I somehow insert a new seal for the cam tensioner without fully removing it?

Also second question, can there be oil leakage in the place where SAI, because it looks nasty as hell. Also is there any oring of some sort to be changed in order to seal it?

Failed MOT due to leaking balance pipe on Brembo caliper + broken rear spring
No indication of oil on my drive so must’ve happened on way to garage!!
They repaired it straight away but I’ll need to accelerate buying shocks/springs now
Typical as I am just putting together a full rear beam assembly to swap out!!!

well fitted the maf and took it out for logs best i could on these busy short roads, managed to hit 178g/s at 5.8k this time instead of 142, definitely better.

any gurus here know if thats in range for 240hp ko3s?

Well I have to order two new door locks as the drivers front locks and unlocks ok but does not tell the car that it’s open so car locks it self after a few long seconds and the n/s/r works when it wants to from the outside so need to sort that out quick don’t need to be doing what I had todo with the front and the other side rear
Also a new clamp for the turbo boost pipe as it likes to come off partly and use lots off fuel and also lots off smoke out off the rear all fun with the mk1 life

Well, it's happening.

If anyone with an FR front bumper knows how to get the centre grill out (it's different from the side ones and I don't want to break the clips) I'm going to be using the clay bar for the next hour or so before I start prepping and priming and I'd prefer to have it out than to mask it.

The more I look, the more issues I find. When the front bumper was sprayed about ten years ago, I'm not sure they took the inserts out or even took the number plate off. That's why the paint de-lacquered around these places.

Insurance approved repair centre my arse.

If anyone with an FR front bumper knows how to get the centre grill out (it's different from the side ones and I don't want to break the clips) I'm going to be using the clay bar for the next hour or so before I start prepping and priming and I'd prefer to have it out than to mask it.

The more I look, the more issues I find. When the front bumper was sprayed about ten years ago, I'm not sure they took the inserts out or even took the number plate off. That's why the paint de-lacquered around these places.

Good luck with it. I did a bit to my front bumper and it now looks worse lol

Thanks everyone. In the end I just masked the top grill.

I got the bottom one out in the end - the secret is a screwdriver from behind and thumbs.

Spent most of the day sanding, masking and prepping, but have put the first light mist on the rear bumper. Put the can in hot water first and it's gone on well.

It can't look much worse than it did to be honest. The last repair shop did a shocking job. Story of my life.

centre lower grille? Get all your fingers hooked in the honeycomb as wide and even distributed as you can and give it a good tug, works for me!

edit ya beat me too it. Good luck with the painting!

I’ll probably regret saying this, but it’s going well so far.

I need to get some more primer in the morning, but the base coat on the rear bumper is going on well. I need to flat it a little before putting on the 2K clear, but nothing’s happened yet that’s given me the fear.

I’m probably going to run out of base coat if I’m honest, so trying to work out if I can put a coat or two on tomorrow and then finish it off when I go back to Brighton, or just to leave it until I’ve got everything I need.

Truth be told, I think the bonnet is going to be the toughest part. Lots of big stone chips that I’ve sanded down that now need some primer and base coat too. I’ve misted a couple of coats of clear on the bit that really needed attention and it’s blending well and doesn’t stand out too much. I think last time I tried I just went in too heavy.

As they say, the prep is the most important part, and so far I’m definitely inclined to agree.

Ran out of base coat, because of course I did...

Rather than try to paint the front bumper, I put some primer on the big stone chips on the bonnet and got a couple of coats of base on there. Not enough to get good coverage, so I'll be ordering a couple more cans.

The main thing I'm learning is that spraying at different angles and doing light mists is getting the best results. What looks good from one angle doesn't always look good from others.

Looks like I'll be driving around like this for a week or two.

It could be worse though, and the paint is a good match and the existing paint isn't too faded. I keyed the whole bonnet for the clear so that's why it looks so scruffy.

The good news is that the ProXL 2K clear went on really well on the rear bumper. Four coats and it's looking good. It'll need a machine polish to get a little orange peel out, but while there's a little colour variation in the hard to access places, the average person isn't going to notice.

Looking good. You did well not to get runs considering it's a vertical surface.

I'm doing the door handles again at the moment after they bizarrely cracked underneath the lacquer one random day after they'd been on the car for 12 months.
