Scuttle is back on and secure. The whole job was a total anticlimax given it took five minutes including jacking the car up.

Random question for people with rear ARBs - where do you put your axle stands at the rear? I used to put them under my rear beam but now the ARB means all the weight of the car is sitting on that instead, and I don't want to damage it, not to mention it's not as secure as the beam.

The jack is on the aftermarket rubber jack point inserts as I hate jacking it up from the sills, but I can't see anywhere under there that I'd feel comfortable supporting the weight of the car.

Any tips?

My (probably not right) way is to jack up using the spring platform then put the stands under the chassis, either on the sills or on chassis rails, always using some padding on the stand saddles

On some models (not the R) there is an air pump that blows hot air at the cat on startup to warm it up. When it fails (they all do) you can pay £300 for a new one, or stick a blanking plate onto the hole.

One thing I would add, can't say I'm a fan of the kit you're using.

Personally I consider jacks and stands to be safety equipment and, while I've done sketchier things in my time, I wouldn't get under anything with the name Halfords on supporting it. But tis your choice

...and I'd agree with you.

I've often looked at those axle stands and asked how what's basically a metal rod (the height adjustment bit) is supposed to support the weight of the car.

It's generally why I keep the stands at the lowest height - in spite of the fact it's an utter pain for someone longsighted like me to see anything that's a few inches from my face, but I'm not going to risk having them collapse from a height. That and the usual wheel under the sills and a jack on at least one side.

I should really look at some new ones - what are you using?

You don't need to go nuts pricewise, just find something that looks and feels beefy, also the less wobble the better. I use Costcos finest (Arcan), but Machine Mart have quite the range too, just try to get hands on rather than using photos.

As for the pins, you'd be surprised. Watch the Hydraulic Press Channel on YT, they have a couple of videos showing how much pressure it takes

I probably just didn't seat the clip properly - it's a pain to do when you can't see the other side.

It's a new Febi one so the lugs should be OK - and they look fine. I've still got the old one too and that's pretty healthy.

I think the big issue is that the side mount for the undertray isn't a perfect fit and it's pushing against it. I'm going to take it out and cut a circle in it so it's not constricted.

If that doesn't work it'll either be silicone pipes and jubilee clips or self tappers.

Much, much better now.

When I fitted it before, the pipe was squashed and deformed. Now it's the shape it should be and holds its shape as well when I put the side tray on.

I've yanked and pulled at it with a lot more strength than it'll probably see in its lifetime - more stress than 20psi would put on it.

I've also sprayed the turbo actuator with penetrating lube, well, as much as you can when you don't have a flexible hose on the can, but it wasn't seized and moved fine.

Just to put the undertray back on now and change the butterfly valve vacuum line for the better fitting one and I'll be able to go for a test drive.

Fingers crossed this will help the fuel economy too. If not, I've got the new EGR valve coming in the next week or so, but if it's not that, I'm really stumped.

Big hiss on boost on the way home and turns out the TIP has come off the turbo and split. I'll see if I can collect a Badger 5 one from Awesome GTI. Coincidentally it's MOT on Friday so will get them to fit, but can I drive a slow 3 miles to the garage without fcking up the turbo if the TIP is barely on?

I cant see it being too much of a problem as its not on the pressurised side.
Although, could confuse the maf sensor and put a light on the dash or affect emissions.

Depends on the split in the hose. But unplugged, itll definitely put the light on. Drivimg slowly with the plug connected, it may be ok.
