I should have fitted my boost gauge when I had the chance - turns out I have a boost leak. Intercooler pipe on the gearbox side.

The problem got worse for me when I cleaned the turbo, so I'm guessing that when the turbo could actually spool up properly, coupled with the fact I did clean a load of gunk from around that pipe, that's what made it show up.

Honestly, this car feels like putting your finger in a dam sometimes. You plug one hole and another one starts.

I still love it to pieces though.

I was putting off all the other work I have to do in case it was bad news today, so now I can start thinking about putting the shocks in.

In other news, I saw a mint platinum grey mk1 FR yesterday on Lewes Road in Brighton. Lowered to the perfect height - not scraping or rubbing - and the paint was immaculate. Whoever owns that car is really looking after it - I'm surprised they're not on here.

First day of no kids for 5 years!

Interior cleaned to within an inch of its life.

Also greased the bonnet latch because it was sticking. Good time to sort it before winter.

Double din looks lovely...

Car cost more than I expected, and was more for one stock intercooler pipe than I’d pay for both performance ones from Creation, but the car’s working again, so I can’t complain.

Weird, but when I accelerate hard in first and lift off, about two seconds later I hear a squeak. Only in first mind. The only way I can describe it is one of my door locks needs some lube, and it makes almost the same squeaking sound when I lock the car. Maybe some kind of actuator or something?

Otherwise, the garage says the car’s in really good condition. The guy who road tested it after used to have a Cupra R remapped to 400bhp. That’s insane, but at least he has an idea of how they should drive.

Best get the shocks in next week then...

Maybe it is the door lock actuator?
Do your door locks lock when you pull off? (Anti hijack).

That's what I wondered at first, but even once the doors lock at 10mph it happens every time I give it a bit of welly, and while it's really hard to tell, it seems to be coming from the right hand side of the car and my squeaky lock is the NSR.

I've got a fair bit of work to do getting rid of knocks and squeaks in the coming months - the knocking sound from the OSR is still there as well - so I'm hoping I'll get to the bottom of it once I get the wheels off.

This one is just so strange though - accelerate hard in first, and a second or two later, that squeak. I've got a meeting in the sticks on Monday and the missus will be with me, so I'll see what she thinks.

Ah, i could be wrong but i had something similar on my arl pd.

Fan belt and tensioner if memory serves.
But dont hold me to it.

With my car it could be anything - and it might as well be the fan... I'll have to take a look.

One of my rear doors locks use to wine on close now and again , it turned out it was the little motor in the lock failing when I stripped it down.

Yes - I'm pretty sure my squeaky lock is the solenoid. It only happens when I lock the car, but why a solenoid might be moving only when I've lifted off the gas after pushing the car hard in first gear might be a mystery for the ages.

I’d strip the door our out and have a look to See for certain it is as you don’t want the lock to stop working in the closed position as it’s a pain to get door open, odd though as once doors lock you should not hear them after that unless a wiring/plug issue weird.

The idea is to draw out the hot air from the brakes and to remove the air from the arches that comes in over the coolers too. Help stop the build up of air and help reduce drag.

I get the reason but a) they don’t look great and b) there’s other ways to go with the air (arch vents don’t reduce drag btw, those would increase drag)

If it were me I’d seal the coolers at the front off from the arches and vent the air downwards, if you use a flap on the leading edge of the vent then it draws air out venturi or gurney style, and also acts as drag reduction device by creating an air fence in front of the tyres (Porsche and Ferrari use this).

As for air in the arches. I’m not saying don’t use vents but (again personally) the vent position is too high, there’s interference from the top edge of the wing plus from the wing mirror, lower and further back should see better results whilst keeping it away from spilling to the underside.

My understanding was brake heat should be getting ejected through the wheels but on that I’m only up to date on road cars (sizing for drag reduction vs brake requirements)

I couldn't think of the proper word. But I got coolers in the front of the arches with ducting going to them so will have air being forced in the the arches fron the front I could drag the air out with ducting at the floor and then out under the sills
