Since moving the car, i got offered a season ticket to fish a lake ive been on the waiting list or ages, so obviously te car took a back seat again.



However with all the good weather, the fish have been sexing it up, so i got a day out in the garage today.
I fitted the o/s engine mount raising plate, and replaced the bolts in the n/s one. Then spent ages pissing about trying to fit the down pipes. Wish i had checked before, but the threads in the manifold were shot, i tried to run a tap through them all, one cleaned up, but the others were too tight, i was worried about snapping the tap....something i don't ever want to have to deal with again
I drilled the holes out bigger, and i fitted them by putting a bolt through with a nut on top. Out of the 4 holes, only one was in a position i categorically ould ot get a drill into.....and luck would have it, that was the one with the good thread!





After fitting the cats as well, i realised i can't fit the full miltek system, because my fuel tank is in the way. If you look at the picture below, shows how far back the exhaust ends.....in the center of the car.

I'm thinking if i fit a fuel tank from any quatro on the mk4 platform should just bolt in, and give me the clearance. Ive not had a propper lok at the rear acle, but hope i should just be able to pipe an exaust straight through the middle? I was planning on only having the middle silencer, with no back box not sure how loud it will be, but making a loud car first, will be cheaper and easier to make quiet than the other way round.

Only been working on it again!

Before I had blanked off the rear lambda's, but thought better of it, and fitted the two tears, the o/s one just plugs into my loom, but strangely the n/s one doesn't even come close to fitting. Today's laborious task was to wire that in. As illustrated by this interesting photo.

I also re-fitted the wiper motor and tidied up the scuttle panel. I rebuilt the n/s driveshaft after I had split it previously to tow it, and it filled with dirt
That's pretty much ready to go on.
I'm waiting for some battery cable comming Thursday, and bar the washers, that should be all the electrics done.
Only hurdle left is the exhaust. I think in going to sell on the Miltek pipe, it's a lot of cash for a pit of pipe, and would take a lot more to get it to fit, I would have liked to run a full r32 system, but I don't think the backbox would fit on the 2wd chassis. Especially not with my bumper.

I had toyed with the simple idea of a 70degree bent piece with two a silencer comming out in front of the rear wheels, but I worry its a lot shorter than the standard system, and might hinder performance on an N/a engine. . If anyone could shed some light on this would help?

If not, it looks like I'm buying some bent tube and build a pipe to exit at the rear. I have a 2 inch back box, but an hoping I can mod it and open it up into a 2.5.

Been out doing quite a bit of work over the last few evenings.

The lambdas all wired in, and i think i have sorted the problem i had with the fault code for the exhaust flapper. Hopefully if i have the right ECU pin that is! I have ran a battery positive through a fuse and a 2k resister into pin 114 on the ecu.




Engine is now all done and ready to go, once i've re-filled the coolant. I've just started working on the exhaust which is pretty much the last job. I decided to chop up the miltek center section i have, im going to run that silencer as a back box. I'm not just waiting on a couple of exhaust bends to turn up, and some stainless mig wire, and should be ready to go after that. There really isn't much room above the rear axle to work with though, so probably going to have to take my time.




I've also started stripping down the the brakes for new disks and pads and a bit of negative camber.

Getting there now....

Start with the small bits quite pleased how this came out, managed to rescue a headlight with a broken clip with the aid of a soldering iron,




I've fitted 20mm spacers on the rear now, and felt i could do with some camber to match the poke. Initially i went over the top, but i've reined it in a little. I managed to get around removing the hub bearings, by grinding down a spanner,




Whilst i was there, although they weren't worn out, i felt new disks and pads wouldn't be a bad idea,

Only one job left before the first drive, an that's the exhaust, which i started fabbing today. Mig is playing up a little, because the reel keeps catching, so its not going to come out as nice as i had hoped, but it will be good enough to get it on the road, and i will re do it another time.

I used one washer on each bottom bolt m10 i think, probably just over a mm thick, and then two washers on the bottom bolt of the caliper carrier.

16mm, once they are cracked off you can do it with an open end spanner anyway, just sort of back each nut out a turn at a time. VW sell a special 'shim spanner' for the job but its like £30 or something ridiculous.

cheers buddy, you must have about -2.5deg camber then? standard is -1.5 i think. have you got any pictures of it on the floor?

My guess is that its added 1.5 ish. No pics on the floor yet until the exhaust is done, but im quite exited about seeing it, so ill get pics as soon as i can. I'm probably going to get it alignment checked, as i would like to sort out the toe.

Never going to win any beauty contests, but the back box section is complete. I'm just waiting on some flanges to join the two back box and mid pipe together, hopefully tomorow, then its time to take the maiden voyage!
