Never have i had such issues timing a car. But i've worked out the issue with the timing at last. Here is a picture of the exhaust cam in the locked position, and the hyd pulley at full rotation. The arrow is supposed to line up with the notch on the adjuster housinng....it's very difficult to see the arrow, but trust me, its miles out.





If i take the cam locking tool out, and rotate the cam until the marks line up...this is how far it is out at the adjuster....





These cams are Shrick cams.....i put the stock cam in, and everything lined up perfectly. Soooo where does this leave me :lol:

I'm thinking either, the cut out for the locking tool is cut incorrectly, or the hole for the dowel on the pulley is in the wrong place! May explain why the previous owner of the cams removed them after a few hundred miles :lol:

I reckon your right, i bet your right the last guy took them out cos they've been made wrong.

Probably the best thing to do would be to dial the cams in and ignore the marks on the cams.

I've just ordered a Summit racing camshaft dial in kit from the states. Trying to find info on the OEM specs might be difficult mind.

Checked the part numbers, turns out they are for the mk5. I think i could get them to fit by dialing them in, i would imagine they are exactly the same, but the exhaust adjuster has more movement on the mk5.
I've decided they caused me enough greif, as i cant find out information as to weather i could get them working.
I put them up for sale yesterday and sold them almost immediately, probably put the up too cheap :lol:

Box of sensible things turned up today. 6 new coil packs, as the only ones are were looking very tired and just waiting to die. Most sensible thing I've bought yet. Still, buying six of everything never gets old :/

A green coolant sensor, as I noticed mine has the old fail prone black type.

Two Audi TT/R32 rear wishbone bushes to go with the SuperPro front bushes I have waiting.
And ome PAS oil.

I've also bought a few other thing for a few ideas I have and am very exited about!

Had a couple of hours free this evening, and i managed to fit the stock camshafts back in.





I span it over by hand several times before i put the rocker cover on, but when i turned it over by the starter motor, there was that horrible ping sound everyone hates to hear.....head in hands i walked round the front, to find my screwdriver had fallen off the car and hit a paint tin :lol: I was very relieved.

I did a compression test, all of them the same, an initial hit of 10bar jumping up to 12bar on the second, which i am very happy with.





After that i refitted everything needed to get it running, and did a 'first start up'
Shame the sound is poor in the video. But it sounds a lot more healthy than it did. In fact, it sounds fecking awesome!

Although in my every growing stream of bad luck, i have two NEW fault codes! P0010 and p0013, both relating to the VVT solenoids, one for each. ''Camshaft Position Actuator Circuit''

It seems unlikely that both solenoids have snuffed it at the same time, i seriously hope not, as that's the timing chain cover back off if it is. One of the plugs is a little iffy, so it could be that, or perhaps they share an earth? Or maybe i left my watch inside :lol:

I think i sorted the problem with the solenoids....its a wiring issue, i had a stray live backfeeding back down the wiring from the ecu, giving me 2v on the earth i think i found where it was from, i had several suspect wires on the ECU plug, but not 100% which one it was, or if the fault will return. Either way i'm very happy!

Today i refitted everything in the bay propperly, although it still needs tidying up. Before i drove it, i was still worried about the coolant on the sparkplugs i had. So i took the plugs out of 1 and 6, and pressurised the coolant system, i only had one small leak, on a pipe i had blocked off professionally y jamming a bolt down it...But no water in the bores, and it held pressure perfectly.






After this all clear, i got the car outside, and left it on a fast idle until it was up to temp. I took a few pictures of it, just because i could. My daily Hack is the Landrover in front, which is worlds apart from this car :lol:

The Height will not stay like this, and i am planning on different wheels at some point in the not so distant future. Also planning to change the look of the car quite a bit.












I took it out for a drive again, and its much better than it was last time! I made a video/sound clip of the drive, that will upload later. Its still very loud, and i think i may need to fit a bigger silencer.

Nice to see it with its face back on, get someone to video a drive by so we can all enjoy the 6 cylinder sound :D

Good work sorting your issues too. Mk5 cams in a mk4 thats a new one lol. At least you found it mate.

Done a few things ready for the MOT today, took it out for a spin again and with the new exhaust it sounds even better now.



Once its through MOT im going to be putting the wheels up for sale too. After something different






I also just finished off my Valveless Pulse Jet ultimately im hoping to put it on a go cart or similar, should be firing it up this week some time. It was built entirely from scrap metal :lol: Cost to date £0.00

Fitted Super pro front, and R32 rear wishbone bushes today. Getting the wishbone off, and the bushes out was an absolute doddle however i struggled for ages getting the first super-pro bush in. It kept pinging out and landing in a load of grit and dirt, that inevitably stuck to the grease :lol:
The second one i did i think i got the knack, but they certainly don't just push in easily like i was lead to believe :lol: Gave the wishbones a spruce up whilst i was there.


Old Voided Bushes were absolutely shagged.






Almost like new. Ish.

When i left the car yesterday....all i had to do was to put the o/s wheel on, get the suspension under load, and tighten the two wishbone to sub frame bolts.

And guess what...the last one i tightened, the one with the captive nut, was just spinning. I loosened it, and heard the horrible donk and the captive nut fell off!So i had to cut a hole in the subframe, and weld a new nut on. The nut is a funny thread, metric fine i think, but fortunately when you are surrounded by vintage buses and bus parts, they are not hard to come by :lol:

So i welded that on, and welded a plate back into the subframe.



i plan on changing the subframe at some point anyway, i want to modify/strengthen one, i just feel that a few pieces of pressed steel are not helping with the handling, i image a much stronger subframe would really make a difference. Ill be on the look out for a quick rack too whist its down.


MOT tomorrow, Going to give it a bloody good clean in the morning, and then pray that it survives the 45min drive to the test station.

Got turned away at the test station because it wouldn't fit over the jack :lol: Booked in at a garage that caters to lowered cars tomorrow now :lol:

I picked the test station i went to today because it was a decent length drive to bed the engine in on the way. I put 75 trouble free miles on the clock today, ran ok, sounded nice, and no leaks/overheating/other fault codes. Eve though i didn't get the test was great to finally drive it half properly.
i got 23mpg all the way there, and coming up to 26mph on the way back. Driving no differently, Hopefully god signs that the engine is doing ok. No mesurable amount of oil burnt ,however it does have a hesitation around 2100rpm, nothinng major but something that needs to be looked at.

First couple of miles were very nerve racking :lol:
After i got a little confidence it feels very strong, it feels like the power delivery the leon should always have had. 4th,5th and even 6th gear are really where it shows, it just pulls right through them. 1st and 2nd gear are a bit of a waste of time tbh. Power is very progressive right through the rev's. I obviously haven't given it full **** yet, nor have i hit the limiter but so far very impressive.

i wouldnt describe it as 'an animal' or 'brutal' it just feels like a fast, OEM car.

Awesome stuff mate, the vr6 engines are torquey as hell and nice to drive. My missusususss Golf 4mo is really nice smooth but quick.
Any ideas what the flutter is at 2k ?
