flip key info thread

First off, yes I've searched, and there is never anything definitive! So please link me if you know a thread with the info! :p

Anyway, basically, I need 3 keys to my car.
I have the spare key, and the remote key.
I've just ordered a new flip key, new blade, new transponder.

So I just need to code the transponder.
I've heard you need special equipment for this?

So here are my options:

A) Go to dealer and let them code my blank transponder? How much, approx?

B) Go to an Autolocksmiths, and ask them if they can do it? Again, how much, approx?

C) Buy the equipment. Someone tell me more about the equipment, and prices?

D) Do I have any other options?

Thanks, advice is well appreciated! :)

By "transponder" I assume you're talking about the glass immobiliser chip inside the top half of the key that allows you to start the engine.

IMO, you'd be best off finding a local auto-locksmith. There's 2 or 3 of them local to me, so I'm sure there has to be one round your way too. They don't need your car to code the immobiliser, just your old remote key so that they can copy the coding. I've heard of places charging between £15 and £35 for doing this.

The equipment to do it yourself can be pricey. For something you're going to use only very occasionally, I don't think it's worth the outlay.

In addition to the transponder coding, you need to code the key's remote function. This is done separate to the transponder coding. This is not matching to the car's immobiliser system, just the remote central locking system. There are videos of how to do this on YouTube, or you can do it yourself using VCDS (a computer based diagnostic program). You can do the remote coding as soon as the remote arrives, without any transponder chip in it, as the transponder is only for the immobiliser system.

Yeah, I can do the remote programming, I just couldn't find any useful info on the transponder/immobiliser chip programming.

Thanks, yeah, I'll probably end up just going to an Autolocksmith.
I thought it might cost around £50, and I've heard prices of £60 for equipment, so I wasn't sure, but that sounds like the cheapest/easiest option.

Thanks

Just for reference, I purchased 2 flip keys from key_service on eBay for £40 each, had them cut at Timpsons for £5 each and then had them coded to the immobiliser for £20. In total that's £110 for 2 brand spanking new flip keys - a lot better value than the main Seat dealer(s) who quote(d) about £125 for 1 single, non-flip key (plus the car for a whole day!).

I now have the original 2 button, non-flip remote/key as the master (I don't have the original "skeleton" key) which is hidden away with the car paperwork, and I can now use either of the flip keys without any worry of losing one.

You have to be veryyyyy patient with the transponder! I think it looks me a couple of hours with a fine needle and a bottle of acetone (nail polish remover). It's glued in and you have to dissolve it and pick the glue away with the needle. Be veryyy careful, it can break so easily!

I am about to (finally) attempt the transponder swap this weekend. Anyone got any tips? I don't want to break it!
Or a step by step guide? :)

Cheers!

I got mine cut off ebay for about a tenner. Got it sent to a mates house, just in case.

To remove the pin, I used a pen to forcefully jab it backwards and forwards a bit, loosening it up. Then I got my sim ejection pin for my iPhone (below), and and held it with a pair of pliers, and pushed into it really hard.

I used a very sharp kitchen knife and slowly cut away at the glue on each side. then it just popped out. Take your time, some people used glue weaking liguid/gel.

(Thanks lambo, pushed it out with jumbo paper clip)

get a thin nail and hammer it in to push the pin out the other side, the pin did not go back in brilliantly the last half mm got flattened and rough when I hammered it back on so it rubs on the key fob a bit lol. Getting a key cut is a mare locksmiths have to have a machine that only cuts them keys so if you live in a town most local places do not have the right machine.

i just messed around with mine doing loads of random things, pressing loads of buttons and eventually it worked, if not try taking the transponder out of your main key instead of your spare key,
my 1.2 07 plate didnt work using any of the methods i had seen on youtube etc..
i know its not the best help but if it helps then it helps :p
