can someone please explain to me the tuning difference between the k03 and the k04, do you get more turbo lag, what do you gain in bhp, can you get the same out of the k03?

K03 is a smaller turbo than the K04, meaning it has less lag and quicker spool, however the K04 being larger can offer more power, especially at the top end.
The K03 turbo with the right hardware and software mods can see around the 290 mark tops, the K04 can see 360bhp with similar hardware and software.

i think the k04 engines have stronger internals, im sure someone can correct if im wrong, but i think because the k04s are desinged to be revved higher than the k03s so they need to have stronger internals o survive the higher revs?the k03 runs out of puff around 6000rpm, while the k04 just keeps on going, its a much nicer drive, much more what i expected a turbo petrol to be when i decided to change from a diesel.
besides that i think the engines are identical, besides the different locations of the diverter valve.
i assume the intercoolers are the same?

Yes the internals in the K04 engine are stonger but the intercoolers are the same as is everthing else. Read somewhere the fuel injectors are also different but maybe someone else can confirm this.

when vag announced the new 'r' range of tfsi's there was speculation of larger intercoolers and upgraded fuel pumps which would soon become available os vag oem upgrades, at much less of an outlay than aftermarket options, although the general concensus seems to be that this isnt the case. i was thinking about the s3 intercooler upgrade, but not sure if i should go for that or the ths one, and then then next thing will obviously be the hpfp

thanks dave, yeah the cupra definately geets revved a lot harder than the fr when your pushing it, feel much better with the stronger internals than i would with just a turbo upgrade although im sure the bwa engine can handle it if so many k04 upgrades are carried out

Why not just remap your FR? When I was looking for my FR I found that Cupras were quite a lot more money. I think you might lose quite a lot in the exchange.

my fr was stage 2 with an itg and milltek tbe, even on stage 1 the cupras quicker. i was planning a turbo upgrade on the fr as its hard to get much more power out of the k03, and an upgrade would be around the £3000 mark including fitting, so i actually saved some by changing to the cupra, and got the stronger internals as standard, it makes sense really. wasnt sure before i changed but its definately the way forward, its a different drive altogether, much much better

You also gained superior brakes and a lighter more compliant alloy suspension set up...thats a win win situation in my book ;)

Just round the corner.
Agree with above, the brakes are fantastic. I drove a standard Mk2 Cupra, and my standard LCR felt more punchier, mk2 just felt flat. Then I bought my current car, Christ what a difference! Pulls all the way though in all gears! Kept saying to the seller how it felt so much more than the Standard Mk2. Eventually he admitted that he'd had a Bluefin installed. He wasn't impressed so went to there Superchips HQ. Superchips redid the code, and it's so smooth. Just got to get her on a dyno to see what she's pushing. Got a RR graph showing 308bhp, and 420nm of torque.

Mk2's definately need a good map to get the best out of them, so recommended for all standard cars!
