This sort of happened to me danny, new pistons 20 new valves engine fully rebuilt, coolant bleed up etc just running on idle just before i took it out for its first run and then- missfire??? i Thought ******* coil packs, give it a little rev and heard a bad top end rattle, gutted one of the new valves had snaped at the top near the collet, it was a dodgy valve where it had snap it was shiny in the middle like there was an air bubble in the valve when it was made! it didnt really mark the new piston because it was only running for a sec thank god! o well mate chin up it happens!!

snapping off at collet bottom groove is typical of misfitted valve springs
see thisd link as to why and its a common problem with those who dont know the 20v head intimately

link here>> http://badger-5.com/bin/5v-installation-note-supertech.pdf

I've posted this before, but do so again to warm peeps of this risk
happens on idle & is'nt a valve issue, but a fitment issue

beware folks

Mine is just the base of the valve, stem is still in, so i dont know what went wrong, alot of people said about fitting the vavles, and they was all fine so cant work out what happend, im looking at the vvt tensioner as the fault. As you say about mis-alinged vavle springs do you mean where they sit on the head and not the seat? i had that whth one but re-did it.

the problem is usually in the spring to head seat as its out of sight, and only a small spot face recess for it to sit in, so easily miss seated and unaware of it. when the heads turned over the full lift of the cams coil binds one side of the perched spring and side loads onto the valve stem onto the hardened grooves, which snap, allowing the valve to drop into the motor killing it.

std valves loose heads in use as the they are 2 piece valves as std... ones like supertech inlets for example are on piece stainless steel, so no join to fail.

its a nightmare situation when they fail

Yeah i thought i may of made that mistake myself but im pretty confident i didnt ive done afew 20vt as i worked for seat for 4years as a tech and now audi. The valves were non genuine from a place called pmf near me. If you saw the valve yourself you would see where i was coming from, the valves are shiny on the outside well this was shiny on the inside aswel like it was porus

Ive also built a few 20vt heads and never had this problem. i dont think it was built wrong. as mike said from the look at the broken valve you can see weak points in making.
ive stripped and rebuilt the head again and checked the springs are seating right and all are fine.
ive heard horror stories about denso plugs and about supertec valves
think its just been unlucky. roll on next sat it will be running again

Hey, sorry to hear about your problems Danny. Was well gutted for you both after all your hard work that you have both put in there to rebuild everything. Just unfortunately been one of those terrible things. I know its not been a rush job as I was there when John finished off doing the head last week. Took him a while to get it done. And that was just one side of it. Just so fiddly to do. Got to have some patients. Was good to give my helping hand lifting it on with him when he came down last Monday. Nice to meet your Girlfriend to. I will get to see the finished product at the weekend. Going to tag along with John. See both your good work when it gets up and running again.

Lol Thanks..

I can see on saturday it being a nervous time as i don't want it to happen again(Which it shouldn't)

Everything went so well on that day too....Which even john commented on i just remeber the sheer horrier on his face when i put a cable tie around the vac line and when i cut it at that same moment the valve snapped...

Things are looking good as denso are looking more in to it as they say it should'nt of happen..
But they were stubben about not sayin if it has happend before hopefully they will do something...I know what you mean by how much hard work me and john have put in to it hence him wanting to drive it soooo much...

Well its good that their looking into it more, they should really. Sure they don't want a bad rep for themselves do they? Probably why they aren't owning up to it happening before/ Yeah going to be nervous time for you both. I couldn't believe it when John text me. First one was saying it was up and running and all way happy. Then boom bearer of bad news. But Saturday will come soon enough and you can be out on the road. Just have to take it easy for a while. I don't get you with the vac stuff. Have to get John to explain in lemans terms for me. Its the only way I learn stuff. He is good like that bless. Least then I can have an idea what everyone is on about.

Yeah proper gutting that. I thought it would have got all done on that Monday. Was trying to help him with getting the bolts off but like he said they were just rounding off, nothing we could have done to get them out at that time. But that is sorted now, just need to get the head on now and it will be all up and running, then you can have a blast out with John. You going to get your money back off them spark plugs? Bet its annoying all this waiting around and things going wrong. I got annoyed not having my car for a week or just over when some prat decided to drive in the side of my car. Nothing is simple in this life. lol. Best of luck for Saturday!

Hahah i understand what you mean...It was going sooo well on that day everything went without a hick up lol wish it had of done now....Maybe saved me a valve

I can only hope about any payout with denso but i aint counting on it tbh...I spoke to the place i got the plugs off and they didnt beleive me about what happend..till i sent him a email with the pictures...

Was disapointing really as it was a massive build up and it started up 1st time and sounded so fresh the engine was really quite bar the noise from the exhaust..

Roll on saturday:D
