Now everything is here I can really get cracking, I want to finish the head first before I do the rods, so I can rebuild the engine quickly. Currently lapping the valves in, here's a finished inlet valve. When lapping the end result should be a nice matt grey solid line around the valve and valve seat, make sure all traces of the grinding paste are removed once you're done!

Rob what did you use to spin the valves while lapping them?
Was thinking a battery drill would be a good option as long as it has a slower speed.
How many different grades of lapping paste did you use?

The valves we used to lap were flat plates (gate valves). These were a pain but we had a machine to do it on.
Would think there exhaust/inlet valves would be alright to do.

Nice to know the old ways are still the best! I used to use the "stick and sucker" method with the double ended tin of grinding paste 20 odd years ago building my Mini engines.
Bet you can't wait for the nerve wracking moment of truth when you turn her over for the firts time after all this work.

Well today I finish off lapping all the valves, so then I set about rebuilding the head. First up I fitted the new stem seals. The exhaust valves went back in easy but the tiny, recessed inlet valves are very, very fiddly indeed! Getting the collets back in are a nightmare on the inlet valves, but I got there in the end. Cleaned up, lubed and refitted the buckets, so just the cams to refit and the head is done.

Next it's onto the rods!

Quick question Rob.

What are you hoping to gain from all this? When i start a project I always think with the end in mind so just wondering what your expectations are.

Yes!

The end result will be a much stronger engine which means I can upgrade to any turbo I choose in the future, eliminating the two main weakpoints in the engine also means it will be safer for doing trackdays without worrying about grenading the engine.

OK the head is finished! Got the cams back in, torqued everything up, new seals and gaskets - did it by the book (ELSAWIN) and triple-checked the cam timing, looks spot on to me, so I'm happy the head is finished.

As your engine is out of the way, ceramic coating the down pipe would be good idea and it’s not too costly. Incase tomorrow you decide to go Big turbo then you will not need to bother much with the Exhaust temperatures and the same time make a nice heat shield around the brake reservoir tank....

I wouldnt bother, you'll lose the dp if you go proper big turbo anyway.

Good luck with finishing the build tho, do as much as you can now tho, one of the biggest regrets i had with mine was that i didnt do enough.
