PD150 Turbo Upgrade Questions....

Reet,

As i've decieded to keep the Leon long term i'm going to start planning on more power.

This is going to take time, i'm going to do this in stages instead of throwing a big lump of cash at it.

So....i'm in need of some advice;

Stage 1 will be to buy a turbo (what turbo?)

Stage 2 will be to send the turbo off for steroids

Stage 3 will be to have it fitted

Stage 4 will be to have it mapped.


From what i've read all I need is the Milltek downpipe before I can go searching for more power. I shall be getting the DP fitted soon, but if it will be cheaper in labour I could have the DP fitted at the same time as turbo.

C'mon guys.....give it to me......im running 185HP at mo, would like to see 220-230HP?

You want to either send off your turbo to be made into a hybrid (you do have a PD150 right?) or buy a second hand PD150 and send that off to be made into a hybrid (I think Ash (ibiza 130) knows someone who is selling a PD150 turbo).

I think supporting mods are full turbo back exhaust, FMIC and induction mods.

Yeh PD150.

One the DP is fitted I shall have a full Milltek Turbo-Back system.

PD150 FMIC is good for 230-240HP?

What induction mods? Good panel filter.?

I'd buy another turbo and send that off to get "worked", that way you still have use of your car untill you get the hybrid fitted. Induction mods and FMIC aren't needed for the power you plan to run. The standard FMIC is good for 300bhp IIRC. All I'd do is smooth the airbox and run a bigger feed with a Pipercross or Green panel filter.

Going to ring two turbo places tomorrow, we supply them both with our oil and I may be able to get a 'deal' with them.

I'm still shocked about the fact it only costs about £80 to make a turbo !!!!!!

You'll need to buy a PD150 turbo, send it off for hybrid - I sent mine to TD and it cost £600+VAT to hybrid!!

Then make sure you have a decent clutch and intercooler setup and go from there.

Do as much of it yourself as you can....trust me!

may aswell use your own turbo , it prob be off road about a week, thats what it took one of the lads by me in his golf pd150 , my uncles fitted the turbo for him,

saying that he bought a new unit of TD

funny u should say about the box, the boy i know with the golf hybrid has mashed his box up, his gear selector fork has gone so he tried to describe not sure of the whole picture ??

ooooooo, not too keen on this gearbox mashing up buisiness.

I've already got the SACHS uprated clutch, wonder what kind of torque is ok for these gearboxes.

yep that boy paid £1200 + for the HT plus fitting etc, not as bad as paying half to sort your out

yep worth finding out about the box and what it can take, eventually i would like to drive down this road

Yer it's not cheap - but for the power increase you're getting it's very good value for money! For example, cams for Mk2 Golf's can cost up to £500 fitted I think, and that'll give you about 10bhp difference.....

I think it all depends how you treat it tbh! I know a lad on here, sooty22 had his hybrid for best part of 40,000 miles and he had no problems. T.Spark has had his done for a year or two and no probs, Jonjay I dont think has had any problems, Tall-Paul didnt have any gearbox problems.....

That's the first gearbox I've heard of going.

To answer your questions

Stage 1: Buy an MD376 TurboDymanics turbo
Stage 2: You can send your own turbo - they can hybrid your turbo in about a weeks time.
Stage 3 and 4: Who is your prefered choice of tuner? I highly recommend AmD Essex for the work. Kenny@AmD has done quite a few big turbo TDIs and got brilliant results. He got out of mine 226BHP and 380LB/FT of torque. Volvic who got his done yesterday got decent results too, 223BHP and 340lb/ft of torque but his turbo was a turbotechnics one.

I cannot speak of AmD highly enough. They know TDIs and what is needed - they are the only people who touch my car. If you ring AmD speak to ben or shaun and say I sent you. They will sort you out.

Things you will need for big turbo.
1) Sachs uprated clutch
2) Miltek DP
3) OE FMIC pipes and uprated clamps. The standard SFS stuff cannot cope with the extra boost.
4) Diff if the money allows
5) As many suspension mods to handle the power as possible.
6) 312mm conversion at least. Make sure you get good brake pads DS2500's.

If you havent already, read through my thread from Big Turbo onwards. Thread is indexed so should be easy reading. Shame your not closer, would have taken you for a spin.
