1.4 gearbox swap

andyj

There's no F in Quality..
Well, this weekend I was suppose to be swapping the gearbox on Em's 1.4 Mk2 Ibiza, as the thrust bearing has gone on it, and I've got an FOC replacement 'box.

Bought a clutch kit from ECP this week, and rang VW to check they had some Pressure Plate bolts in stock (need to replace them as they're 'strecth' bolts) was told they had 8 in stock (only needed 6), so I went in this morning to pick them up, only to be told that the system said 8 in stock, but there was none on the shelf !!GRrrrrr

Ended up just changing the lower wishbones on both sides, as the bushes were worn and were picked up as an advisory on last years MOT, and this years MOT is on Tuesday !!! ;) only took me an hour to do both... easy job

So, the gearbox is going to have to wait until next weekend when VW have had chance to re-order some PP bolts etc ;)

sounds like a good days work, shame about the bolts - the gearbox was my 2nd most 'satisfying' job to do

you say a good 'days' work..... didn't start til about 11.45am after I'd dropped Em in town, and then faffed around going to VW, and then to GSF to see if they stocked the bolts (which they didn't), and then packed up by 2.00pm to go pick Em up again!

Kinda surprised that the clutch kit didn't come with the PP bolts... unless it was supposed to, and they've just fallen out the box....

www.gsfcarparts.com have them with new bushes for £19.50+vat, pick them up from your local shop if you want to save carriage

andy's were cheaper still

minor change in handling, but no more knocking noises was the difference when I changed mine last

didn't notice any difference to be honest.....

the advisory last year said "OSF suspension bushes deteriorating, but not causes excessive movement"

but when I took the old wishbone off, there was no visible difference between it and then 'new' one I was fitting, was had relatively new bushes fitted.

Just checked and VAG Spares have them for £15.68+vat. Presume left and right of the car use the same wishbone as there does not seem to be one for each side? How hard are the rear bushes to fit?

Guys - i've to replace the clutch on my sons Seat 1.4 any problems getting the gearbox out? Is it strightforward shafts out, g/box, engine mountings off and gearbox out or is there any hidden problems.

cheers

straight forward, just heavy... put padding on the ground just incase you drop it!

putting it on is awkward as you need to balance it in an imaginary position

Cheers Mork - gearbox out last night as you say a heavy wee brat for all the size of it. Got my son to lie underneath to catch it! I knew he was useful for something other than spending my hard earned ££. Got a replacement kit this morning for £42.

Cheers
