Front Components Mk4

anyone got any recomendations for front component sets for my FR was looking at DLS R6A's for old car but dont know if these will fit and so on. Price range say £150 - £250

also will just putting a decent set of comps in improve it alot? not planning to change HU or put amp or sub in just yet

I have some Focal 165A components that are great in the MK4, I had them in my old one (were only in for about 8k and I never had them on loud as I listen to rock and the Ibiza rattles too much!), they were awesome but now I have sat nav and don't wanna change my head unit so I'm not going to fit them. I want £70ono for them

You will need to change your headunit and add an amp if you change your speakers, OE ones just aren't powerful enough.

anyone know the max mounting depth for the front? just ordered some Focal 165KPs, didn't realize that they had a mounting depth of 77mm. The 165a's only have mounting depth of 66mm. Think they will still fit?

I had to mount my 165As on 15mm MDF, and the space between the speaker and the door card was about right.

I think you'll struggle with the KPs!

Just make some rings using mdf. Ive got a set of Boston 6.5PRO comps installed in the front of my car and they sound amazing. Ive not just sound deadned my doors either so they should sound a lot better once thats done.

The Focals are very nice. Get them, made mdf rings, install. To really make them sound at teir best you will need to (most likely) change the head unit and also add a dedicated amp to power them.

Tom B, did the door covering still fit or did you have to remove the speaker grill part from the door?

Can someone give me the exact size of the speaker bracket so that I could get it made before I go get everything installed?

The door panel fitted as it should, the speaker didn't hit the grille.

with the 15mm mdf, did you have any space left behind the speaker or in front? I'm really worried now. I know I should have checked all of this stuff first, but I got the focals for half the price so i had to bid!

how wide did you make rings? 2.5cm? 2cm?

i had autolead spacers that are about 2 inches deep the window also does not wind down enough to make it in the way.... and phill the top link will sound alot better than the bottom one as it has a decent crossover not a built in one inside the tweeter... i have the top link set in my front doors in my car, you can get the JL comps (and alot more) off merlin77 for a guarenteed price or very cheaply of ebay (but u dont know what has happend with these)

hi folks, it's me again. Another two or three questions:

1. Where did you all put the crossover for the components?
2. How did you fasten the crossover for the components?
3. What kind of screws did you use to mount the mdf ring and speakers?

PS: I'm not lazy, just want to try to avoid taking apart the doors twice.

1) I found a place on the doorcard for the crossover to go, just above the door pocket.
2) It was fastened on with hot glue, but velcro will also do the trick.
3) I used M8 bolts, nuts and washers for my MDF rings.

2) Used no more nails but the cross over has come loose.
3) No more nails.

Had to mount mine near the door because the tweeter had the speaker wire pre installed and they where quite short... but if this isn't the case for you extend the wires untill your cross overs are in the boot? Make a feature of them.

mine are next to the speaker.. held there with dynamat extreme... and it wont come loose...its hard to pull it off let alond come loose... dynamat everytime!if your going to make a feature put them on the inside of the door card... to show them as long as your happy puttin a few holes in it...

thanks for all the tips folks, no need to show them, all I care about is good sound for myself, no showing off, etc. Even though sticking them in the boot sounds interesting enough. I'll have to think about it. I bought some velcro tape, wonder if that will stick in the inside of the door.

do you use a nut and bolt to mount? and a coulpe of washers, and would thick rubber spacers work?

making a circle of mdf sounds hard? (and high precision)

Doesn't have to be a perfect circle, mine where really rough, piece of mdf a drill bit and a jigsaw that all you need + the mounting card that shows you the correct dims for the speaker.
