ok'z thanks

ibiza, the speaker im using (JL VR650's) are a couple mm deeper than the factory, but according to some mnunbers i found:

QUOTE
The plastic speaker holder is 6¾" wide and 1" deep.

Depth from the metal inner panel to the glass is 1¼" towards the front of the car, and 2" towards the back of the car. Its 1¾" in the middle from the metal to the glass. (Its slanted)

The total depth of the seat speaker with the mount is 2½" deep so the magnet sticks out 1½" from the back of the mount
UNQUOTE

that makes 1/4 inch clearence behind factory speakers to window. my mdf is 30mm deep, i might have to file a bit off the door

oh yeah Phil, those rings are looking really nice...perhaps I shouldn't take any pics of mine...way too ugly... guess there is a reason why I became a computer guru and not a carpenter

btw those are 40mm long, 6mm diameter machine screws

Sorry to pee on your bonfire but you shouldn't have cut those slots in the speaker rings. Now when the speaker is screwed in there will be gaps so you wont have the speaker sealed in the door.

Also don't put dynamat on the panel between the rings and the metal, that's a waste really as you want the rings as solidly mounted to the metal of the car as possible, not isolated from the bodywork.

ok cheers for that advice

i can fill the square up with some sealent?

needed the slots to fit the screws in, otherwise the speaker wouldnt fit flat on the wood as the screw heads would be no the surface?

another question.....

when i mount the speaker on there, is it an idea to put a ring of sealent before i press the speaker on there, so the mounting is absolutely air tight?

that leads onto another q.. :p

to get the speaker cable from the spkr connections to the door panel, i was gong to drill a small hole in the mdf ring and run them thro.

can i still do this, with some sealent in the hole?

Yeah but look at all the big black grommets you can poke the wires through to the back of speaker. Eg. near the right hand side, drop the wire down then feed to speaker, then through the ducting of the door so it goes into the cabin, run wires along door trim then under carpet to your amp under the passanger seat.
