timing belt

my timing belt broke and the AA guy said possible engine damage, i did futher move it with what little power was left in it after the belt came off/snapped to get it off the road, so i think this would probably wreck it even more.

can anyone tell me how bad this will be, how much about could it cost to get fixed?


also if i claimed insurance, does this spoil my no-claims?

it is a LCR

chances are you have bent some valves, if its only valves ou have got a way lightly, most of the money will be in labour removing the head, inspection, new valves etc , dont skimp by buying only to replace the noticeable bent ones either, replace the lot (if you have to pay for it that is) im not sure how insurance would cover this, if you have full no claims, it will probably add 5% onto your next premium. go for it.

I don't think insurance covers you for mechanical failure like this. :(

It would have been impossible to run the engine after the belt went, so I can't see how you could have moved it under power. :confused:

£10 a valve I was quoted. 20v engine thats £200, add labour £100. thast still cheaper than a timing belt change.

oops forgot youll need a new belt aswell. Sorry matey, its a bitch, but the AA man is right.

Sorry to hear about it mate.
More than likely will have some valve damage. Hard to tell till its stripped down. How fast were you/the engine going when it went? If it was idle then sometimes not as bad. We had one guys go and it did 16 of the 20 valves... wasnt pretty :(

my old 16v slipped at idle coming to a junction, still took all exhaust valves with it, i think i had pics up here at one stage, they were like bits of spaghetti.

How to make a bad situation seem like it really is! I think its time to fix the puncture on the bike. How many miles had it done when the belt went?

Apart from the financial side, its the time that it takes to get sorted, getting a garage to look at it, source the parts and get it back running. Not many people like taking heads apart and replacing valves etc, sometimes there are other problems shortly after and can end up coming back and biting. As I said, mine did a lot of damage, even after the new belt etc, I still had a cam follower break in the middle and wrecked the cam etc too again taking the belt with it, i just checked it and went for a different head after that, the bottom end was solid and never had any bother with it.

Valves, belt, tensioner, maybe pistons (unlikely).

Thats easily 4-5 hours labour, if you can get that done properly for £100, I want to know what garage you're using ;)

You'd be as well replacing the water pump at the same time mate as the belt etc needs to come off again to change it. DPJ is right, your insurance will not cover it.

You could always get a friend to tow the car out into the country then set fire to it. after its burnt to the ground ring your insurance.

i am 2 years through paying a 4 years loan probably 5 grand left to pay.

would it be worth it getting rid of it?

how much money could i make if i sold the parts or whatever? could i get nearly enough to pay off the loan?

and i could buy a new motor

loved that motor as well full thing ****ed coz of a rubber **** belt.

the garage was supposed to replace it at 60 under the last owner, the only box they never ticked in the sevice book was the timing belt. ****

id get it changed it will leave u with no motor if it ****s up

cant afford to get the engine fixed and stuck with a loan for 2+ years and no car. cocksucker!!!

You can't plead ignorance, its your fault at the end of the day. Do you really think the previous owner was going to fork out £450 on the ''BIG'' service and then sell it?

Surely when you bought it, you must have thought, ''i really need to get this done very soon''

Only kidding, a set of valves shouldn't cost that much tbh unless you've damaged pistons also.

I would have thought you would have been able to get it done for sub 1k including valves and labour charges.

Are you 100% certain insurance doesn't cover this sort of thing?
