Forge DV failed!

Cuming back from town this morning! The car was driving normal. i gave it abit of gas then heard a odd sound from the dv, it normally makes a whoosh sound but it turned into a quick chatter sound.
On the boost gauge it dropped pressure fomr -0.8 to -0.2. The car was not shifting and pick was very poor!

come home and examied all the pipe work and check the dv!

It was total shattered! The bottem end was missing!
Lucky i had spare diahpram for it!

Wat annoys me is i paid so much as its more reilable and can handle higher pressure!

Im NOW worried :( , the small bit of plastic of the diagpram has got sucked into the intake system. [:@]
I cant see it! will this mess up the turbo???

something so small is unlikely to cause a big turbo issue id say

id personally ring forge asap and show them your picture etc and see what they suggest

Even a tiny object getting caught in the air intake system can cause huge problems with the turbo. I'm not sure how possible it is to get as far as the turbo, but I'd be worried personally.

This what forge emailed me saying:

Hi Atif

Sorry that you have had an issues with this diaphragm , I believe that this is an isolated incident .and everything should be fine .
Tell you what I'm going to do if its ok with you , Ill send you our 007P piston type valve out as a replacement free of charge, and then I can have yours back for evaluation


We have actually stopped making the diaphragm valves now ....not be cause of any problems with them but due to the fact that sales have been very slow and many customers prefer the piston , Please let me know if this is ok

Being completely unqualified, and not knowing anything about internals i'd say that if it was going to cause problems it will prob have done so already...with the turbo sucking the air from the intake any particals will have already gone into the system...

Like I said have no knowledge of exactly how it works, but that would seem logical in my brain???

You're totally right.... especially if Big Lad put his foot down a fair bit after it failed. But that plastic has to have gone somewhere, and that's what would worry me. Even grit or sand or something that small can kill a turbo, so big-ish lumps of plastic would be catastrophic.

when the boost gauge droped and the dv changed sound (sounded quite nice ;) ) i did rev it! restarted the engine. abit of stick!
the car drives normal now! Just wondering where it could be by now! its is plastic after all and could have melted by now!

Im happy forge are sending me a alternative replacement as i dont have to worries of it failing espically when im in the middle of no were! :clap:

There's a big difference between grit and a bit of plastic. Grit can get where you don't want it to and ruin a bearing. A large piece of plastic might shatter into bits large enough to not get into any unwanted place but large enough to be blown into the engine. I would hazard a guess that any plastic in the combustion chamber would get burnt up on the first time around and exhausted as noxious gases.

Just a guess though based on science of materials...

I've been having occasions when the boost seems to be vented by the ECU unneccessarily. I was wondering whether a better DV (than standard) would be a good thing to fit.

We know the standard Bosch unit is unreliable at std pressures, it's cheap plastic cr@p, my OEM Bosch unit went on my old LCR after about 7,000miles.........i'd replace it on a remappped motor for peace of mind.

You can do a leak test on your DV details in Forge's section somewhere if you search

That'll have gone straight into the compressor blades of the turbo and been shredded.

I wouldn't lose any sleep over it now. It'll be ok.:)

Thank god for that! Just gona take easy till i get the new DV! The 007p has metal piston so it should be stronger! but mines cost 10 quid more (must be roatating vacum line thingy). :blink:
