Phil, do you still run an IHI? If so how many miles have you done on the new turbo? The EBC is a good idea. ;)

Yes still run the same set up, now covered about 2k on new turbo, but if this one goes then i will be changing it to a different turbo.

IMO the EBC is a good way of prolonging the life of the ihi and with the press of one button you can be running your desired full boost when needed:D

I would'nt be too paranoid, look at Songmans LCR, he's been running that set up over a year now and 40000 miles without to much problem. At about 1.6 - 1.7 bar of boost! He did have trouble with the turbo bearing cartridge, the cartridge droped and seized the turbo but that was down to a faulty DV.
This was the only problem though. I think if you do regular oil changes, let the car warm up, cool down you cant go far wrong with the IHI turbo. ;)

and on the flip side of that coin I know of over 10 IHI's which have suffered failures now (just the ones I've heard about)
Overspool them to the higher boost levels and you are running into their safety margin on overspeeding the bearings. Its more a case of luck, and if you're feeling lucky.
All the good aspects of their relatively quick spool vs their power delivery is in part due to the low inertia of the cartidge turbine/impellor assembly and shaft. Very small shaft vs an equivalent Garrett. Better as in lighter less inertia, worse as in small shaft smaller bearings, faster speeds = failures

Keep a sensible boost and fine.
How much of the driving is on low boost and how much on these high settings?

I would wager if on high boost all the time, the weakness's would be exposed. You can see how marginal things are when a suspect DV can cause the compressor stall to fail the bearings in such short time on songmans.

If you want a low 300bhp motor then its great, as it was originally aimed to be. continuing to push it harder for the higher figures people now "expect" has moved it from its reliable zone as the many failures of housings and bearings confirm.

320bhp mode and it will transform your mk4 cupra, no doubt big smiles.. But then if wanting more you are limited to how and where to go to utilise the investment you have made on the other associated kit parts. There's only so much room down there.

Cant believe that! What boost was it running?

You calling me liar then?
1bar on its low boost settings and 1.6bar on its high boost setting.

FACTS my man, simple FACTS

also on its 2nd exhaust manifold and 2nd or 3rd exhaust housing due to warpage/cracking/porosity of casting etc...

The motor is a fully built motor... 1900cc, largeport, all the right bits. 370bhp on Owens rollers when mapped (runs a motec ecu)

You should be fine. 330bhp-350bhp is a safe limit for the IHI. I suppose any more you might run into risks. Its like anything, start pushing the limits and anything could happen. Its down to luck! Im hoping once the rods are changed and head is either replaced or flowed around 370bhp! It will be pushing the turbo though, fingers crossed!

Mine ran 344bhp @ JS just before removal when mine went into JS for its new 1900 motor. That was running 1.6-1.8bar peak on max. engine was tired with a lto of ring blowby.

I also have 3 or more IHI's lying around, 2 or 3 exhaust manifolds with various stages of warpage, cracking, but funnily enough never a bearing failure. (maybe they melted & warped before they got to that stage - lol)

run em hard, expect to replace them, and when you get fed up of having to keep changing them, start over and do it all over again. :) ;) - DIFFERENTLY

There is a reason I do not allow more than 1.2bar with 1.4bar overboost on the IHI conversion I have done on customer car. He wanted more, and it was not going to be via an IHI, JS install. start again, but very different power goals this time. (this golf was just over 300bhp @ Awesome on these figures)

It has been reliable on its conservative , sensible settings.

fair enough, JS must get some complaints about there IHI conversion from returning customers who have had there turob go within 10k miles surley?

not all IHI's are supplied and fitted by JS tho are they.

Whilst I was working with them on these I bought 3 x IHI's, and as many housings, and manifolds myself.

some of the users have been running these for a number of years and as such have more experience.

When i decided to go for the IHI conversion, Jabba told me about their new turbos they would be using for future conversions and showed me an example. It was Mahoosive! :-o I did ask if i could buy one, but they told me no as they want to test and develop the turbo first on their own cars before realeasing them to the general public. If my turbo does go bang then this could be the future! ;) But hopefully not too soon. :D

i would say its a good setup, and as bill said dont go mad with boost on it and it should be fine.

but bugger me 5k :-o

so glad i opted for the eliminator, making 320bhp :D costed around 2500 in total inc the eurojet FMIC, forge hoses etc fitted by me.

though should be running a bit more now torque and power now due to the great cooling from the FMIC.

plus the bore to 1.9ltr and port and polish this monday should bump it up more

The best person to ask is Bill. I'm very happy with the conversion. I had my doubts when i was considering the IHI conversion, but in the end i decided it was the right choice.

im nervous as its alot of money and so excited too thanks again for advice

Best advice to you mate with respect - is to calm down!![B)] - JBS is a reputable, well established tuner, who will do you an excellent job.

You should have confidence in them, and be advised not by what you read, but, by what they tell you - they will be doing the work, and they will have to offer you some form of warranty.

I don`t think for a minute that they would dream of supplying you with an unreliable product - think about it!
