Hey. I have the 1.8 20v and i was wondering if anybody knows if you can modify it to a 1.8 20vT easily? I mean the easiest way i can think of is to try and find a 1.8 turbo at the scrappy and steel the inlet manifolds and computer and turbo off it. But is there any other way, as finding a toledo 1.8 turbo is hard enough, let alone a scrapped one!! Any help would be much appreciated.... And Happy Christmas everyone!!

You could widen your search for a scrapper a little... Audi A3, TT, A4, Golf GTi Anni, Passatt, Leon Cupra or FR... think they all have pretty much the same engine...

Or, if money isn't a problem, you could go for a 'big' turbo and all the bits that go with it...

Or, I think I saw an LCR 225 engine (complete) on ebay - could do a transplant ;)

Don't really know what I'm talking about mind so I'll shut up before I confuse myself :help:

As far as I know there are 3 different turbo's - K03, K03S & K04.

I "think" the fitments are:

K03 - 20VT 150/156bhp (Audi A3, TT 150, Mk4 Golf GTi, Bora, Beetle, Ibiza)

K03S - 20VT 180bhp (Audi TT 180, Audi A4, Mk4 Golf GTi Anni, Passatt, Leon Cupra/FR, Toledo, Octavia VRS)

K04 - 20VT 210/225bhp (Audi TT 225, S3, Leon Cupra R)

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong with the above list ;)

dont do it mate as you will be wastin dosh.
there is a seat toledo sport 1.8 20vt with the same engine as seen in the cupra with 180bhp.
coz they are saloons, they tend to loose value faster and thats what makes it the ultimate bargain rocket.

out there over the edge vw tech
as a lot of people will say dont build what you can buy as its cheaper to insure and buy than to build one the same.
because when you get in to it theres a lot of parts to get not just a turbo, ecu, dash clocks and engine stuff .insurance company will want enginers reports uprated brakes, suspension and posably more + your insuring a modified car then

well i pumad my fiesta zetec s (i.e transplanted the 1.7 puma engine into it) and on the way back from the place i had it done someone pulled out infront of my and wrote my car off and i hadn't declaired it to the insurance company then and they still payed out. so they clearly arent that fussed.

it really is pointless TBH. The trouble and aggro to all of that just to save a few quid on insuarnce that would easily become void if an engineer inspected and thus costing you more in the long run.

Besides, if you sold yours and searched hard for a Tolly turbo (or even just a Leon cupra maybe?) then it may not be that much cash difference.

Unless you will do the work yourself, its just alot of hassle I think. And like said, the std 180 isn't that fast, you should go big turbo if your going to be doing all that work anyway.

There's a good rule of thumb to follow regarding insurance. Say you're out for a drive in your undeclared, modified 1.8T and you:

1) Write off a Ferrari Enzo or
2) Kill someone

In either case, there is going to be a very large payout which the insurance company will try their best to get out of paying. Finding the new engine is all they need to do this, leaving you personally liable to foot the bill - it's a no brainer.

no you're not - no matter what you do to your car, your third party cover is still perfectly valid.

Thats correct, they can't wrangle out of paying anyone else, only paying you for your car!

It was conjecture I must admit :)

So.....

If I had an insurance policy based on a 1.1 Fiesta, but was actually driving around in a Ferrari and caused some massive loss to a third party, my insurance company are obliged to pay the claim regardless?

That isn't a challenge, I'm genuinely interested!

If you put a ferrari engine into the fez, then yes.

If the Fez and Ferrari are two different cars then no, unless your fez cover gave you "3rd party when driving other vehicles cover".

as long as you are driving the vehicle that your policy is for, then they have to pay out. If you modify that vehicle and don't declare it, that is between you and them, the 3rd partys still benefit from that policy. If its a different vehicle completely, then they don't have any responsibility on that one, as there is no policy on that vehicle.

you may find its down to the insurers discretion or the formalities of the contract you became committed to when you first took out the policy.

some policies can be fully null and void if improper declarations were made, there for you were never insured to begin with and they wont have to pay a penny to anyone

gone abit off topic now...either way its not very clever, but then its a risk..some people go years never owning any insurance...as it stands..revo is not declared on my policy
