Anyone with basic mechanical knowledge should be able to identify a subframe and its mounting points.

If you haven’t got that basic knowledge you shouldn’t be working on the braking system.

Hi all, does any one have a picture they can show me that shows the bottom of a Leon Cupra 2003 to where is the Best place to position Axle Stands?
As im looking to do some work on my front disks this Friday and just wanted to check

I have basic mechanical knowledge, but dont know where the subframe is ....

if you had extensive mechanical knowledge then yes, but surely the whole definition of basic knowledge is you only know bits and bats??

subframe is the whole framework under the front of the car that the wishbones and steering rack are mounted to. It is held on by 4 bolts which can be easily seen.

I think i know the one you mean but wouldnt have known it by name as a subframe bolt... i presume youre talking about the big bolt between the jacking point and the front wheel where the back of the wishbone is attached?

not the one holding the wishbone on, the one behind and closer to the centre of the car than that; I'll try a find a pic

help?

To axle stand the front i use the rear subframe bolts and to axle stand the rear i put it on the underneith just in front of the subframe there is a plastic bung that i take out and the stand with a small wooden block goes there nicely

Thanks for all the posts but job done : )

I'm not bad with basic repairs / maintenance but just to make sure I got my mate who luckily use to be a break specialist to
talk me through it but made sure i was doing the work so I would learn and that I did! Even with the basic first step of where to put the Axle stands. ;)

Happy days

Thanks all for your time and help.

uuugh.... obviously was ok this time, but id say that was the worst place to put them, on the wishbones.... could bend them easily with all that weight on them, putting alot of strain on the bushes there mate.

ah well job done, but i wouldnt be axle standing it there in future matey

Oh really... thanks for letting me know.
Just for next time when i have to do it you said "the rails that run down the sides under the car...." Not sure what you mean?

Now i think about it could i not have used the trolley jack to jack it up under the sub frame then use the Axel stands on the side jack points? (Forgot how much those jack covers are a pain in the arse to put back on!)

Cheers mate.

nah dont put the stands on the jacking points.... jack up on the points and stands under the subframe bolt as pictured above... theres only 2 rails running the length of the car... cant miss them really.

Guys at the garage today told me to put them on the rear subframe bolts for the front of the car, and as someone else said on here, for the rear of the car put them just front of the rear axle bushes with blocks (on top of the bung).

haha I did, though at some quite extra outlay.

The guy that came to pick it up on the flatbed was like 'oh that's criminal, to do that to a cupra'
