Depression, being a Mechanical Engineer, I would agree with you also. For the same reasons you have pointed out. :)

Also depends on the bolts as well....and the quality of the material used for these

Saying that, I do want some spacers, this is one of the reasons I am still contemplating both options

It's from first hand experience, not calculations, we've actually seen it happen and had customers who've had it happen to them as well. The Ebay spacers go through no testing what so ever, the H&R ones come with full TUV approval.

Magnesium Alloy V Steel  You can't just look at it as simply as that, you need to know the build up of the alloy and the percentage of the Magnesium. We have recently run trials on coating Inconel with a Magnesium Alloy to cut down on surface wear and cracking with good results which was actually better than using Stellite.Anyway the main reason against using steel is weight, remember by using a spacer you are stressing the bearing a little more and with a steel spacer this is aggrevated even more.Personally I went for the alloy ones for weight purposes.

I have the Ebay ones and i have to say when they arrived i thought the quality looked ok, otherwise i would not have put them on my car, the only thing i can say is that the bolts did seem to be made of a soft metal so yes they may be more likely to get threaded but thats only if you over tighten them i would say.
Like i say i wouldnt have put them on my car if i thought they were crap.

Its really up to you guys though as to which ones you buy

Alot of arguing going on in this thread! I was gonna start a post like this today, how random. I think i'm gonna get 17's and i have just got mine lowered 30mm, not sure whether to go for 15mm or 20mm! and I dont trust ebay so i'd probably get the other ones to be honest! its all decisions judging by what people say on here, i think most people have said 20mm so i'll probably end up doing that :)
